Description
Discovered as an infant drifting down a river, Kouryuu was named and raised by an unconventional Sanzo priest at Kinzan Temple. His guardian, eschewing rigid monastic traditions, prioritized hands-on learning over doctrine, nurturing their bond through casual mentorship rather than formal religious training. This environment exposed Kouryuu early to the guardian’s detached yet insightful nature, which concealed a profound grasp of Buddhist non-attachment—lessons unfolding amid political strife and supernatural threats within the temple. A formative incident involved witnessing Ukoku’s violent rise as Sanzo after murdering his mentor, revealing the brutal realities of succession.

At thirteen, Kouryuu’s life pivoted during his Sanzo investiture ceremony. As his guardian transferred stewardship of the Seiten and Maten sutras, youkai forces attacked. To shield him, the guardian immobilized Kouryuu with a binding spell, surrendered the Maten Sutra, and accepted death. This loss thrust Kouryuu prematurely into confronting his role’s grave responsibilities, hardening his resolve to honor his guardian’s legacy while grappling with his dual identity as spiritual heir and violence-scarred survivor.

Years later, during a mission to probe a sealed monster, Kouryuu encountered a cryptic child revealed as a formidable demonic entity—an interaction planting seeds for their eventual alliance. His pragmatism in forging bonds despite societal anti-youkai biases extended to two figures straddling human and demon worlds, their trauma-shadowed existences mirroring his own role as a bridge across divides.

Flashbacks and preludes trace Kouryuu’s growth: wrestling with leadership’s isolation, moral gray zones in duty, and a cryptic wager with Ukoku tied to “the next rising sun.” These threads weave themes of cyclical conflict and legacy’s weight, charting his path from sheltered orphan to a tempered leader balancing spiritual mandate, personal bonds, and a world steeped in chaos.
