Description
Motomiya Akane begins as a modern Kyoto high school student, drawn through an ancient well's voice into a parallel Heian-like world. This realm names her the Priestess of the Dragon God (Ryuujin no Miko), destined to purify corruption and shield the capital, Kyou, from demonic incursions. Though initially hesitant, her innate kindness and protective drive compel her to embrace this duty.
Her journey intertwines with classmates Tenma Morimura, a protective friend harboring unspoken affection, and Shimon Nagareyama, a steadfast companion often misjudged for his Western features. Both join her in Kyou, becoming part of the Eight Guardians – warriors sworn to defend the Priestess. Tenma struggles to master his powers as the Seiryū of Earth, while Shimon confronts prejudice as the Suzaku of Earth.
The remaining Six Guardians hail from Kyou: Minamoto no Yorihisa, the stoic Seiryū of Heaven bodyguard; Inori, the vengeance-driven Suzaku of Heaven; Fujiwara no Takamichi, the chivalrous Byakko of Heaven scholar; Tachibana no Tomomasa, the flirtatious Byakko of Earth general; Eisen, the timid Genbu of Heaven monk devoted to Akane; and Abe no Yasuaki, the artificial Genbu of Earth created by sorcerer Abe no Seimei. Yasuaki's journey evolves from stoicism to fierce loyalty through his bond with Akane.
Akane's primary foes are the Oni Clan, led by Akuram, who summoned her to seize her power. His ambition fuses with vengeance against Kyou's historical oppression of oni. Conflict deepens through Akuram's lieutenant, Ikutidar, whose loyalty wavers due to love for Inori's sister Seri, and Ran Morimura, Tenma's sister transformed into the opposing Dark Dragon Priestess. Akane consistently seeks Ran's redemption over defeat.
Akane's growth shifts her from uncertainty to decisive leadership. Early trials involve mastering purification and uniting the Eight Guardians, faced with vengeful spirits and Akuram's assaults. Her core kindness manifests in shielding Shimon from prejudice and offering foes second chances. Adaptations maintain this arc: the manga depicts accidental romantic moments with guardians like Yorihisa, while the anime highlights her strategic command during the Oni Clan's attacks.
Akane's legacy shapes later installments indirectly. Her archetype – a modern girl thrust into historical strife – recurs in successors like Takakura Karin and Kasuga Nozomi, with Nozomi displaying combat skills absent in Akane. Spin-offs such as *Maihitoyo* and *Oborosoushi* expand her guardian interactions and clashes with Akuram, reinforcing her unwavering commitment to empathy and peace against existential threats.
