Description
Hayato Fūrinji, known universally as the "Elder" or "The Invincible Superman," dominates the martial arts world. Despite his advanced age, he possesses a towering, muscular physique, fair skin, piercing blue eyes, and distinctive long blonde hair reaching mid-back, featuring one thick antenna-like bang. He sports a full chest-length beard and mustache, showing remarkably few signs of aging like wrinkles or gray hair. His younger self displayed shorter hair and lacked facial hair. He occasionally dons a poorly concealed disguise as "Garyū X," wearing an undersized robotic mask and Kamen Rider belt in a futile attempt to pose as a 20-year-old disciple—only Apachai remains fooled.

In youth, Hayato was recklessly violent, battling indiscriminately against anyone, including women, children, and animals. He deliberately provoked fights, such as spilling tea to incite conflict, and once faced 500 martial artists at once. Presently, he retains elements of this arrogance and impulsiveness, frequently overspending dojo funds and boasting about past exploits. He communicates through bluntly oversimplified plans like "fight until you're the last one standing" or "run until they catch you." However, he now holds a strong sense of justice, believing the powerful must protect the innocent—a philosophy forged by his failure to stop his son, Saiga, from embracing the lethal "Killing Fist," which led to Saiga's wife's death and the abandonment of his granddaughter, Miu Fūrinji.

Hayato's life centers on Miu. He rescued her as an infant from the snow near her deceased mother, raising her while traveling the world to steer her from Saiga's dark path. He is intensely overprotective, demanding any suitor defeat him in combat to marry her. This causes volatile reactions, like when he witnessed Miu kissing Kenichi Shirahama and required restraint by other masters. After Jenazad kidnapped Miu, Hayato blamed himself, desperately scouring the globe shouting Jenazad's name. Upon her rescue, he tearfully thanked Kenichi for safeguarding her, acknowledging Kenichi's capability as her protector. His affection for Kenichi is evident; he nicknames him "little Ken" or "Ken-chan," apologizes for brutal training regimes (though often enjoying Kenichi's torment), and secretly celebrates Kenichi's bravery against master-class opponents. Seeing his younger self in Kenichi, Hayato permitted him to date Miu—conditionally—after Kenichi's victory in the D of D tournament.

Hayato's martial prowess is unmatched, ranking him among the world's two strongest fighters. He masters a hybrid of 108 legendary techniques, manipulates his anatomy for inhuman bodily control, and subconsciously suppresses his power to minimize lethality—often limiting himself to 0.0001%–0.0002% of his full strength during training or non-lethal confrontations. Even at these fractions, he overpowers disciples effortlessly. His strength allows him to hurl people like projectiles, bend battleship cannons, rip trees apart, and overturn tanks. His speed enables him to run on water and execute kicks invisible to high-speed cameras slowed to 1/1000th of a second. His endurance is extraordinary; he once fought continuously for over a week with minimal nourishment or rest against a near-equal opponent. Additional skills include healing through ki manipulation and single-handedly countering military forces—an event observers likened to "the start of World War III."

Hayato's background involves pivotal historical conflicts, including dismantling Yami bases alongside Mikumo Kushinada during WWII. He formed a complex friendship with Silkwat Jenazad, a Yami member who taught him medical techniques before their rivalry culminated in an inconclusive battle. He also intervened in the life of Kai Midō, master of Tenchi Mushin Ryū, aiding Midō's disciple Tsutomu Tanaka in marrying Midō's daughter Mayu—though he could not prevent their later deaths by Isshinsai Ogata. His mentorship of Kenichi involves rigorous survival-based training, such as leaving him in forests to force moral choices against opponents like Ogata. During the D of D tournament, he disguised himself as Garyū X to covertly mentor Kenichi and Miu, using only 0.0002% of his power while blindfolded. Key later actions include rescuing Kenichi and allies in the Tidat Kingdom by revealing King Raden Tidat Jihan's survival and personally treating Miu after Jenazad's manipulation.

His relationship with Kenichi evolves from stern mentor to grudging respect, particularly after Kenichi repeatedly proves his dedication to protecting Miu. Despite occasional scolding—like placing Kenichi under house arrest for reckless battles—Hayato consistently acknowledges Kenichi's growth. His unwavering commitment to Miu's safety and his role in guiding the next generation underscore his legacy as a guardian of the "Saving Fist" philosophy, prioritizing the protection of life.
