Movie
Description
Red Impulse is the codename for Kentaro Washio, an elite pilot and commander of a specialized fighter jet team supporting the Science Ninja Team. He staged a fatal plane crash during a mission in the Hontwal Republic to disappear and infiltrate Galactor, leaving his family behind. This led to a 14-year separation from his son, Ken Washio, during which he remained unaware of his wife's death.

In the original series continuity adapted into the film, Kentaro operates as Red Impulse—a masked, stoic figure aiding the team covertly while concealing his identity. He wears a red flight suit with a white "r" insignia and visor, switching to sunglasses out of uniform for secrecy. His exceptional piloting skills rival or surpass national air forces, and he commands a high-performance red fighter jet equipped with missiles and vulcan guns.

Emotionally, Kentaro harbors deep pride in Ken's growth as a leader but suppresses his paternal instincts to protect him. This conflict peaks during Galactor's V2 plan, where he abandons secrecy to rescue Ken and sacrifices himself to save Earth. Jun relays information from Dr. Nambu to reveal his identity to Ken. The film incorporates key episodes depicting this arc, including Kentaro's death.

The OVA presents variations: Kentaro briefly attends his wife's funeral, interacting with young Ken before disappearing again. After Galactor decimates his team, he infiltrates their headquarters solo. Before sacrificing himself against Berg Katse, he entrusts his sword to Joe Asakura for Ken, who later wields it in a pivotal battle.

Adaptations alter his portrayal. In *Battle of the Planets*, he is Colonel Cronus, leader of the Rigan Red Rangers, ejecting before his ship's destruction and reuniting off-screen with a separate family, negating Ken's connection. The Top Cow comic retains Cronus as codename but uses Red Impulse as the team name, hinting his first name is Ken. *Eagle Riders* renames him Harley Harris, depicting his son Hunter aware of his double life and his team as predecessors to the Eagle Riders.

An unproduced 1998 "New Gatchaman" pitch reimagined Red Impulse as a brainwashed all-female quintet serving as government antagonists to the Science Ninja Team, with their leader unknowingly being Jun's sister.
