Description
Ken Washio, known as G-1 or Ken the Eagle, leads the Science Ninja Team as its tactical expert. His Bird Style draws from the eagle, and in his civilian life, he works as an aircraft test pilot and an airmail delivery boy, flying a small plane to remote locations. He lives in a small shack beside a private airstrip left to him by his father.
Ken grew up believing his father died in a plane crash during his early childhood. He was orphaned at age 11 when his mother died of illness. Afterwards, he was raised by Dr. Kozaburo Nambu and began training to become G-1 at age 13. In some continuities, such as the OVA, his mother is named Sayuri Washio, and he briefly glimpsed his father at her funeral. Unbeknownst to Ken for many years, his father, Kentaro Washio, had faked his death to infiltrate the terrorist organization Galactor under the alias Red Impulse, later leading a squadron of combat pilots.
Ordinarily calm and collected, Ken can become emotionally overwhelmed in crises, relying on his team for support. He is an avid reader and enjoys flying. He struggles with finances, frequently accumulating debt at Snack Jun that goes unpaid. Though dedicated to restoring peace, he is awkward in romantic situations, often unaware of or unable to return the feelings of his teammate Jun, though their relationship evolves by the series' end. His leadership is typically by-the-book, though he sometimes acts on his personal sense of justice over orders.
Ken has blue eyes. In the original series, he sports shoulder-length, messy dark brown hair and wears a red-and-teal T-shirt marked with a "1," white bellbottom pants, and sometimes blue flight gloves. His Bird Style suit is primarily white with blue gloves and boots, a white feathered cape lined in red, and a red and black helmet with a blue visor. Designs vary: the OVA gives him shorter hair, a blue hoodie, jeans, and a "1" symbol necklace, with a blue and white Bird Style. The Infini-T Force version depicts him at age 24 with short grey hair, stubble, and a more armored suit.
He is skilled in multiple martial arts, including judo, karate, kendo, kobudo, aikido, kickboxing, and boxing. His Bird Style enhances his abilities, granting super strength, flight, super speed, super breath, enhanced vision, super smell, super hearing, encyclopedic knowledge, and the capability to exist in space. His fighting style emphasizes speed and agility, employing weapons like the Birdrang, a rocket-boosted boomerang; the Bird Saucer, a collapsible bladed discus; a Shock Gun; and later, the Gatchaman Fencer sword. His personal vehicle, the Eagle Jet, forms the front section of the team’s mecha, the God Phoenix.
Key relationships shape his journey. His relationship with his father, Red Impulse, is pivotal; their reunion occurs just before Red Impulse sacrifices himself to destroy a Galactor missile, a loss that profoundly affects Ken and fuels a period of anger and recklessness. Joe Asakura, G-2, is his second-in-command and closest friend; though their personalities often clash, they share deep respect and trust. Jun, G-3, is a respected teammate whose romantic feelings he initially overlooks before their bond deepens. Dr. Nambu serves as a father figure and mentor who raised and trained him.
His character develops across media. In the original series and its sequels, Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter, Ken confronts the loss of his father and later Joe, adopting a more bitter and driven demeanor in Fighter. The OVA offers an alternate backstory where Ken fought as a pilot in the War of Marseilles, earning the name "The Star of Africa," and receiving his father’s sword for a pivotal battle. The Infini-T Force incarnation presents an older, more experienced Ken from a universe where the war against Galactor lasted six years. The cancelled Imagi film project and 2013 live-action film also feature the character, the latter set in 2050 with Ken as part of a team of "Receptors" who harness power from special stones to fight Galactor.
