Description
**Joe Asakura**, originally George Asakura ("Joji" in Japanese), is the son of Sicilian Galactor scientists Giuseppe and Katarina Asakura. They planned to defect but were assassinated during their escape when George was eight; he survived. Dr. Kozaburo Nambu rescued him, staged his death with a decoy burial, renamed him "Joe," and became his guardian. Nambu raised and trained Joe alongside Ken Washio at his villa. Between ages 13 and 18, Joe underwent Science Ninja training under Nambu. An alternate backstory from the "Condor Flies!" light novel reveals Joe as a genetically engineered super-soldier, with the "George Asakura" identity and memories implanted, making him a target for both ISO and Galactor due to his enhancements. This genetic element was planned for the cancelled Imagi film, where he’d be named Joseph Asakura, witnessing his parents die at a bombed pizza restaurant on his twelfth birthday. The 2013 live-action film reimagines him as "Receptor 0062," part of a global anti-Galactor unit, with a childhood engagement to Naomi (later the third Berg Katse after surviving a Galactor attack).
**Appearance-wise**, Joe sports shoulder-length brown/ash-blond hair, blue/gray eyes, and harsh features. His civilian attire includes a red-and-blue "2"-numbered t-shirt, blue bellbottom jeans, and black driving gloves, later evolving to a navy crew-neck shirt with light-blue sleeves and straight-legged jeans. His Condor Bird Style uniform features burgundy with dark blue gloves/boots, a dual-tone blue feathered cape, and a black helmet with red condor markings and gray-lavender visor. The OVA redesign gives him auburn hair, olive skin, a muscular build, a crucifix necklace, a skull tattoo, a vow bracelet, and a leather jacket/jeans combo. His OVA Bird Style shifts to navy blue with burgundy accents and a standalone "G" emblem. Imagi film concept art depicted a "bad boy" civilian look in black leather, while his Bird Style alternated between armored gray-black and burgundy designs, later adding 3D elements and exposed hair. The 2013 film removes avian details from his "Onyx Condor" armor, using black/deep blue plating. *Infini-T Force* redesigns him with a ponytail, black racing jacket, long pants, and a Bird Style mirroring the original colors.
**Personality-wise**, Joe is headstrong, cynical, and vengeful, favoring direct confrontation over negotiation and launching missiles at minimal provocation. Despite his loner exterior and temper, he values teamwork and remains loyal to the Science Ninja Team. His revenge drive against Galactor overrides personal safety, escalating after a terminal illness diagnosis. Post-cyborg transformation in *Gatchaman II*/*Fighter*, he views his enhanced body as expendable, amplifying his self-sacrifice tendencies. The Imagi script emphasized a "lone wolf" persona—sarcastic, brooding, and resistant to joining the team until Dr. Nambu’s abduction forces cooperation. Relationships include friction with Ken Washio over tactics, though mutual respect deepens after shared traumas like Ken’s father’s death. Dr. Nambu tolerates Joe’s volatility out of guilt over his parents’ assassination, initially withholding key details.
**In combat**, Joe specializes in marksmanship and weaponry. His primary armaments are feather shurikens (razor-tipped projectiles upgraded in *Gatchaman Fighter* with rocket propulsion and knockout gas) and a grappling-hook pistol doubling as a firearm/drill. His fighting style blends acrobatics, projectile attacks, and wire techniques. He pilots the G-2 Condor Machine, a race car based on a 1970s Nissan Skyline, equipped with a Gatling gun and bulletproof shielding. This evolves into the subterranean Condor Attacker in *Gatchaman II* and the flight-capable Gatcha Two in *Gatchaman Fighter* (forming part of the Gatchaspartan mecha). The OVA reimagines his vehicle as a Shelby Cobra that transforms into a pursuit car.
**His arc spans continuities**: In the original series, he sacrifices himself to destroy Galactor’s headquarters, his body unrecovered. He returns in *Gatchaman II* as a cyborg with a heart-adjacent bomb, battling his humanity while fighting on. The 2013 film’s post-credits tease shows him infected with Virus X, hinting at a potential transformation into the fourth Berg Katse. The cancelled Imagi project planned to position him as the final team recruit, echoing his "Condor Flies!" genetic-engineered origins.
