Description
Ryoutarou Hata, alias Yui Liao Ming, was born in Japan. His family became stranded in Taiwan after catastrophic earthquakes devastated Japan. His parents abandoned their Japanese citizenship for Taiwanese nationality, an act Ryoutarou perceived as a betrayal of their homeland. Despite this, he maintained a strong connection to his Japanese identity and harbored a firm intention to return to Japan.
As a plainclothes officer for the Taipei City Police Department, Ryoutarou approached his duties cautiously, preferring non-violent resolutions even in high-tension situations. Investigating the deaths of two Japanese individuals led him and his partner Zhou to the Tansai refugee camp housing Japanese survivors. His investigation uncovered a complex case involving radical elements and conspiracies. He pursued it tenaciously, aiming to expose the true culprits rather than low-level operatives, driven by his personal stake in protecting Japanese refugees and unresolved feelings about his heritage.
Driven by a desire to understand Japan's divided state and uncover his family's fate, Ryoutarou abandoned his life in Taiwan. He partnered with Genichiro Ryu, a fellow Japanese survivor, and Chan, a Taiwanese gangster. Together, they smuggled themselves into Japan, navigating its politically fractured landscape—split between U.S. and Chinese control—while confronting forces opposed to reunification. Throughout this journey, Ryoutarou grappled with his identity as a Japanese native disconnected from his homeland and his conflicted emotions toward his parents' choices.
