Satoshi's Mukubird, recognized as Ash's Staraptor in English-language media, started as a Starly captured early in Ash's Sinnoh journey during the search for Pikachu. Initially serving as a navigator, this Starly possessed a calm demeanor yet demonstrated leadership by organizing the escape of captured bird Pokémon from Team Rocket, directing a hypnotized Meowth to free the flock. During this confrontation, Starly evolved into Staravia and defeated Team Rocket using Aerial Ace. After evolution, Staravia exhibited a more glamorous and outspoken personality. It experienced disappointment when not selected for gym battles but remained a dedicated team member. In the Eterna City Gym battle against Gardenia, Staravia defeated Cherubi using Wing Attack and Aerial Ace but lost to Turtwig after being immobilized by Leech Seed and Leaf Storm. Later, Staravia learned Brave Bird through observation of Reggie's Staraptor and targeted training with Ash. During a battle against Maylene's Machoke, Staravia secured victory using Quick Attack and Aerial Ace, though fatigue hindered it against Meditite and Lucario. A significant development occurred during a Pokéringer contest where Staravia evolved into Staraptor mid-battle against Paul's Honchkrow. This evolution unlocked Close Combat, a Fighting-type move that secured Ash's victory and distinguished Staraptor as Ash's only bird Pokémon to wield such an ability. As Staraptor, it became a notably competitive and resilient battler. In subsequent gym battles, Staraptor defeated Candice's Medicham using Brave Bird but fell to Abomasnow's Ice Punch. It also participated in the Sinnoh League, achieving victories like defeating Nando's Roserade with Brave Bird, though it lost to Paul's Ursaring and Drapion. After Ash's Sinnoh journey, Staraptor resided at Professor Oak's laboratory. It later interacted with Ash's Journeys-era team, assisting in Dragonite's training alongside other Flying-types including Swellow and Unfezant. Staraptor observed Ash's World Coronation Series battles, such as victories against Paul and Steven Stone. During Ash's finals match against Leon, Staraptor appeared in a vision encouraging Pikachu after it took damage from Charizard's Fire Blast. Following Ash's championship win, Staraptor joined the Pallet Town celebration and later participated in searches for missing Pokémon at the lab. Throughout its development, the Pokémon's known moves encompassed Aerial Ace, Quick Attack, Wing Attack, Close Combat, Brave Bird, and Gust. Its competitive nature and Fighting-type specialization remained consistent traits in battle.
