Description
Ibaragi Sotetsu, playwright of the nomadic Yuyama Troupe and addressed as "Sensei" by its members, operates as an enigmatic strategist whose true ambitions blur between altruism and self-interest. He orchestrates events from the shadows, manipulating allies and adversaries alike to secure the Head of the Conqueror—a legendary artifact tied to centuries of chaos. Collaborating with Yokohama merchant Jubei Nakaiya and harnessing foreign networks, including British trader T.B. Glover, he fuels his clandestine schemes with resources and influence.
His alliances extend into the Bakumatsu era’s political turmoil, notably aligning with Enomoto Takeaki, a leader of the Shogunate’s resistance. This partnership serves his grander vision: sculpting a new republic under his covert control. Though he aids the Yuyama Troupe’s quest for vengeance against Hario Genba, their murdered leader’s killer, his support remains conditional, secondary to his personal ambitions.
Sotetsu’s integration into the troupe stems from calculated interventions, such as sparing Shiranui Kozo from execution, securing their trust while embedding himself in their affairs. A master tactician, he nudges history’s course with subtle precision, balancing loyalty to the troupe against the peril his artifact hunt poses to their goals.
His relentless drive for power collides with Yojiro Akizuki, the protagonist determined to destroy the Head of the Conqueror. Their relationship teeters between uneasy partnership and rivalry, casting Sotetsu as both catalyst and obstacle. Interactions with Kakunojo Yuyama, the troupe’s leader, flicker with unspoken recognition of intertwined fates, yet he coldly subordinates sentiment to ambition.
Shrouded in mystery, Sotetsu’s origins predating the troupe remain obscured. His story culminates in lingering uncertainty, a testament to his enduring role as an inscrutable manipulator whose machinations ripple beyond the immediate fray.
