Description
Yoshitoshi Matabe Ijiri serves the Kasuga clan as a samurai during Japan's turbulent Sengoku period (1574). Approximately 30 years old, he bears the poetic epithet "Blue Sky Samurai" for his cloud-gazing habit, symbolized by his battle banner’s blue background and white cloud design. Enemies fear him as "The Devil Samurai" for his combat prowess.

Matabe's past holds deep tragedy: his mother died of illness, while his father and brother perished in war, leaving him without family. He resides in the Kasuga fort with Goemon and Goemon’s wife Osato, who manage his household. His loyal squire Niemon maintains his armor and weapons.

Matabe shares a profound, silent bond with Ren Kasuga, daughter of clan lord Moriyasuke Izumi Kasuga. Childhood friends, their connection is stifled by rigid class divides—he a warrior, she nobility—preventing him from expressing his feelings. This tension defines their story.

Shinnosuke inadvertently saves Matabe’s life by disrupting an enemy ambush, forging a bond that leads Matabe to mentor and protect the boy. Matabe commands Kasuga forces against Takatora Ōkurai’s aggressive army, which seeks to forcibly marry Ren. His loyalty to the clan is absolute.

In the climactic battle, Matabe duels and defeats Okurai general Naotaka Magara Tarozaemon. As Okurai forces retreat, a treacherous soldier shoots Matabe. Dying in Ren’s presence moments before her confession, his final words thank Shinnosuke for saving him long ago.
