Description
Kyou Yamada, 15, sustains her younger sister Asu in a modest apartment. Orphaned by their mother's death in childbirth and abandoned by their debt-ridden father who fled gambling liabilities, she shoulders this responsibility from a deathbed promise to protect Asu.

She supports them financially through multiple part-time jobs like early-morning newspaper delivery and tutoring, while balancing junior high school attendance with economic survival. Her budgeting evolved from initial naivety—impulsively spending savings on a festival yukata for Asu—to careful planning after facing consequences.

Her personality blends resilient optimism with underlying anxiety. She projects cheerfulness to shield Asu from hardship, masking her own fears like thunderstorms. This protective instinct manifests as overcaution regarding Asu's health and safety. Deep-seated loyalty drives her to prioritize Asu's well-being above all, sometimes causing conflict when their perspectives diverge.

Beyond sisterhood, she interacts respectfully but warily with their stern landlord, Mr. Hayashi, who offers quiet support. Neighbors like Ranko Saegusa provide practical help, such as lending clothing, while the affluent Echigoya sisters highlight Kyou's resourcefulness navigating poverty.

She harbors a fear of medical settings rooted in her mother's hospital death. This trauma resurfaces when Asu requires hospitalization, forcing Kyou to confront her dread. Asu reassures Kyou that her unwavering presence—not material provisions—fulfills their mother's promise, deepening Kyou's understanding of caregiving.

Her development centers on reconciling responsibility with vulnerability. Early tendencies to shoulder burdens alone gradually soften through accepting community support—evident when neighbors assist during a housing crisis—and recognizing Asu's emotional maturity. Shared memories, like their mother's wish spoken in a dandelion field, reinforce Kyou's resilience, redefining her strength as interdependence rather than solitary endurance.
