Description
Koushi Inuzuka is a 17-year-old high school student and member of the Inuzuka clan, one of the twelve Chinese zodiac martial arts families linked to the Dog. He is the son of martial arts master Unken Inuzuka. Physically handsome with short black hair and brown eyes, Koushi stands 172 cm tall and wears a black school uniform, earning popularity among female students.
A traumatic childhood incident where bullies terrorized him left Koushi psychologically scarred, causing him to reject martial arts and freeze when confronted with violence. This deep aversion to combat fuels his aspiration to become a prosecutor; he believes the rule of law is a more effective weapon than physical strength. He deters attackers by reciting laws and studying legal texts, though this tactic often fails. His life is further complicated by his father arranging his marriage to Momoko Kuzuryuu—daughter of the rival Dragon-associated Kuzuryuu clan—without his consent. Koushi initially resists, viewing Momoko as a stranger and criticizing her appearance and behavior.
Koushi's character evolves across the series as he faces assassination attempts from opposing zodiac families aiming to prevent the marriage alliance. Initially a non-action protagonist reliant on Momoko for protection, key events catalyze his transformation. During Momoko's temporary absence, he grapples with daily tasks and recognizes his dependence on her, signaling growing emotional attachment. A confrontation with rival Yuusuke Endou forces Koushi to acknowledge his weaknesses. He subsequently undergoes intense training, including regimens from the Koganei clan, to overcome his fight phobia. By the series' conclusion, he achieves significant martial prowess, mastering techniques like the Inuzuka clan's "Eye Beams" and engaging in high-level battles. He continues pursuing his prosecutor ambitions and must defeat Momoko's father to formalize their marriage, attempting this 129 times before succeeding.
Relationships define Koushi's journey:
* His dynamic with Momoko shifts from hostility to mutual reliance. A recovered childhood memory reveals he once saved her from bullies, though he remains embarrassed by an incident where she inadvertently saw him exposed. He gradually accepts their betrothal but delays consummation until formal marriage approval.
* Sanae Nakajima, his class representative and close friend, is later revealed as his secret protector from the Horse clan, her family having safeguarded the Inuzuka lineage for generations. While Koushi views her platonically, Sanae develops suppressed romantic feelings for him, prioritizing her duty.
* Iroha Miyamoto (Snake clan) initially attempts to assassinate him to restore her family's honor but later develops a crush, becoming an ally who supports his relationship with Momoko.
Koushi's name reflects his character: "孝" (kou) signifies "filial piety" or "obedience," and "士" (shi) means "samurai" or "warrior," while "Inuzuka" translates to "dog mound." His journey resolves with him balancing his martial heritage, legal aspirations, and commitment to Momoko.
