Description
Prince Zardoz, born Heinel, is the son of La Gour (also known as Kentaro Goh or Ned Armstrong) and the Boazanian noblewoman Rosalia. He is the half-brother of Kenichi (Steve), Daijiro (Big Bert), and Hiyoshi (Little John) Goh through their shared father. Born into Boazanian royalty, he endured childhood ostracization as the "son of a traitor" after his father rebelled against the empire's caste system, which privileged horned Boazanians and enslaved the hornless.
Emperor Zambojil, who usurped the throne by revealing La Gour's concealed hornless status, sent Prince Zardoz to command Earth's invasion. This mission aimed to expand the Boazanian Empire while eliminating Zardoz as a potential rival. As commander, he deployed Beast Fighters (or Beast Knights) across Earth, directing the campaign from Castle Heinel, an underground fortress. His key aides included strategist Jangal (Draco), scientist Zuhl, and Katherine (Zandra), his devoted aide and unrequited love interest.
Throughout the conflict, Prince Zardoz displayed a complex sense of honor. Though capable of ruthlessness, he occasionally showed fairness in battle, contrasting with more deceitful subordinates. Repeated failures against Voltes V led to his demotion by Emperor Zambojil, who dispatched spies like Marquis Zaki and General Gurul to monitor or eliminate him. During the invasion, Zardoz remained unaware that the Voltes Team leaders were his half-siblings or that his father, La Gour, survived imprisonment and led a hornless rebellion.
His arc culminated during Boazan's liberation. Witnessing the hornless rebellion overwhelm imperial forces, Prince Zardoz confronted the fleeing Zambojil. Using his mother's dagger, he killed the emperor, seeking redemption for his complicity in the regime's crimes. In his final moments, he saved Kenichi from a fatal attack. As he lay dying, Katherine sacrificed herself by taking a sniper's bullet meant for him. With his last breath, he acknowledged her love and expressed peace, having reconciled his heritage and protected his brother.
In the live-action adaptation *Voltes V: Legacy*, the character is named Prince Zardoz throughout and exhibits heightened cruelty, including torturing subordinates and murdering hornless slaves. His relationship with Zandra begins later under Emperor Zambojil's orders, not as childhood friends. He shows sporadic restraint, such as sparing Little John's life upon request. His physical portrayal shifts from pale-skinned to darker-complexioned, reflecting the adaptation's reinterpretation of Boazan as a Middle Eastern-inspired society.
