Karin Takakura is a 16-year-old modern high school student transported to a parallel Heian-era Kyoto ("Kyou") when a maple leaf touches her hand. This marks her selection by the White Dragon as its priestess, charged with restoring peace to a capital fractured by conflict between the Emperor and Retired Emperor. Her arrival blazes like a comet, yet she faces disbelief and isolation as the Retired Emperor already recognizes another priestess, Taira no Chitose.
Disoriented and utterly alone in this unfamiliar world, Karin struggles to navigate it. Her modern clothes and behavior trigger ostracization and bullying. Potential guardians meet her with hostility; only Fujiwara no Yukari, a young Star Clan descendant, immediately believes her claim. Guided by the mysterious Akram, who instructs her to find her Eight Guardians to gain the strength needed to return home, Karin starts as fragile and desperate to flee. Gradually, an innate desire to help others drives her to accept her duty. Her early attempts to recruit guardians often end in rejection due to political loyalties or doubts about her authenticity.
Karin's development centers on purifying defiled areas and defeating vengeful spirits across the capital. Beginning as a reluctant figure who faints after her first unconscious use of power against a malevolent spirit, her persistent efforts to aid the suffering populace—like distributing modern medicine such as aspirin—build her reputation and strengthen her priestess abilities. She strives to bridge the divide between the Emperor's and Retired Emperor's factions, advocating cooperation despite deep rivalries. Key moments include rallying guardians to break a time-stopping barrier cast by Chitose and uniting with Chitose to confront the demonic Night Parade summoned by Akram's betrayal. In the climax, Chitose entrusts her with the Black Dragon's power, enabling Karin to merge with both dragon deities.
Resolving the conflict, the combined dragons grant Karin three wishes. Her first wish eradicates evil spirits, the second extends the dragons' protection across the parallel world, and the third wish varies: it may restore happiness to characters like Chitose or Yukarihime, save Akram from annihilation, or facilitate her return to a guardian—either in the parallel world or the modern one. Should she choose to return home alone, she reappears in her original timeline at the exact moment she left, her priestess powers spent but her memories preserved. Alternate endings, shaped by choice, include staying with a guardian or wandering the world with Akram.
Symbolically, the dandelion represents Karin, echoing themes of sincere love, partings, and divine messages in Japanese flower language, reflecting her role as a bridge between worlds and her self-driven actions masked by uncertainty.
