Minamoto no Motomi is Genbu of Heaven, one of the Eight Guardians sworn to protect the White Dragon Priestess within a Heian-era parallel world. A member of the Murakami Minamoto, he serves as Chief Judge in the Ministry of Civil Services, managing imperial appointments and festivities, with an innate affinity for water. Born the Retired Emperor's biological son, he was secretly exchanged for the infant son of the Minister of the Center and his wife, the Madam of the Sixth Pavilion. Raised as Kazumi by the Minister, he endured years of emotional neglect and verbal abuse from his adoptive mother, who constantly belittled him as worthless. This fostered chronic self-doubt and a habit of avoiding recognition. His childhood spiritual sensitivity, allowing him to perceive spirits, was punished whenever he spoke of it. He found refuge playing the flute, which calmed restless spirits and became his lifelong specialty and solace. His guardianship begins when Priestess Karin follows his flute music at Mount Kita. Initially resistant due to feelings of inadequacy, he commits to supporting her after witnessing her vulnerability. Their combined yang energy later proves crucial, dispelling a vengeful spirit's curse afflicting Karin and cementing him as her canonical first guardian. Motomi's journey involves confronting his birth secret and divided loyalties. On the Emperor's route, he hesitates to oppose his half-brother Prince Kazuhito despite witnessing harmful curses, only acting when Kazuhito endangers Karin. On the Retired Emperor's route, his younger half-brother Akifumi reveals his true parentage, leading to a gradual acceptance of their bond, evolving from awkwardness to mutual acknowledgment and culminating in a twin ending where they share tea with Karin. Romantic developments with Karin vary. On the Retired Emperor's route, her encouragement during court duties bolsters his confidence, prompting him to leave a poem misinterpreted as a suicide note; he clarifies it was a pledge to become stronger. On the Emperor's route, emotional turmoil disrupts his flute playing until he composes a new song dedicated to her, symbolizing his acceptance of changed feelings. In the sequel "Yume no Ukihashi," Motomi appears as either a starting guardian or captive. His dreams feature recurring encounters with a five-colored cloak threatening to levitate Karin; he deduces it is a divine gift meant for her return to the real world but requests to keep it as a contingency. Their dream interactions foster unspoken happiness, reflected upon their waking reunion. Motomi possesses violet eyes and waist-length violet hair with spiky bangs. He favors the scent of kuroubou, the color aisumicha (medium gray), autumn chrysanthemums, and winter heavenly bamboo. His preferred locations are Toba Palace, Kamigamo Temple, and Mount Ousaka. He wields prayer beads as weapons and wears traditional court attire.
