TV-Series
Description
Ken Utonium, known as Ken Kitazawa in Japanese contexts, is the 8-year-old son of Professor Utonium. He ignites the series' core conflict by disobeying his father and using the experimental substance Chemical Z to destroy a glacier threatening Tokyo City (sometimes called New Townsville). This act triggers an explosion scattering black and white light rays across the city. The white rays transform three ordinary girls into the Powerpuff Girls Z and grant sentience and speech to Ken's robotic dog, Peach (or Poochi), while the black rays spawn numerous villains.

Despite his youth, Ken possesses exceptional intelligence, having earned a PhD through advanced homeschooling under his father. His academic abilities surpass those of the teenage Powerpuff Girls Z, though he initially lacks social skills. To develop socially, he enrolls in elementary school. Though academically unchallenged, he forms friendships with classmates like Jou (Joey) and Kuriko (Kasey), Momoko's younger sister.

Ken exhibits a complex relationship with his father, alternately addressing him as "Papa" casually and "Professor" seriously. He often corrects himself after using the wrong term, reflecting his internal conflict between familial affection and professional respect. His mother's absence, working on a space station, is a significant emotional factor. In Episode 26, his longing culminates in a video monitor reunion facilitated by the Powerpuff Girls Z and Santa Claus, strengthening his belief in the Christmas spirit.

In Episode 37, Ken temporarily becomes a superhero when the Powerpuff Girls Z are grounded. Adopting the identity "Ken Kitazawa Z" (or "Kamikaze Ken Z"), he dons a customized black-and-white suit with a blue helmet and cape. Despite lacking superpowers, he successfully defends the laboratory from the Gangreen Gang using improvised traps and psychological tactics, notably tricking them into drinking hot sauce disguised as Chemical Z.

Ken's character design draws inspiration from Kid Utonium (the Professor's childhood counterpart in the original series), though early concept art resembled Dexter from *Dexter's Laboratory*. He views the Powerpuff Girls Z as older sisters, maintaining a close, albeit occasionally exasperated, bond with them.
