Description
Rino Rando, a 14-year-old transfer student at Miyagami Academy, swiftly becomes Secretary of the Best Student Council. Her arrival follows her mother Chieri Rando's death, prompted by an invitation from her pen pal "Mr. Poppit" – later revealed as Kanade Jinguuji. Rino is inseparable from her hand puppet, Pucchan. Without Pucchan, her academic and combat abilities falter; with the puppet, they improve dramatically. Pucchan houses the spirit of Rino’s deceased older brother Tetsuya Rando, likely empowered by their mother. The puppet speaks only when manipulated, including by Rino herself.
Cheerful, friendly, and kind, Rino is also notably clumsy, frequently landing herself in trouble. She appears to be the only Best Student Council member lacking inherent special abilities, relying instead on "dumb luck" and Pucchan’s combat skills – including a "Burning" attack that ignites foes. Her deepest fear, born from her mother's death, is being alone. This drives her core motivation: ensuring everyone's happiness. This fear surfaces as emotional vulnerability, causing her to cry when hurt, lonely, or overcome with sympathy.
Her background ties to the Jinguuji family through her mother Chieri, who distanced herself due to disagreements with their traditions yet possessed their hereditary abilities. Rino inherits these latent powers, which awaken late in the series, enabling her to project her voice across vast distances. Though her true surname might be Jinguuji, this is concealed for her protection. Within the council, Rino forms a close bond with Kanade, sparking jealousy in Kaori Izumi (who secretly harbors feelings for Kanade) and fueling student rumors.
Rino evolves from a clumsy, academically struggling girl into a more determined and resilient figure. Initially dependent on Pucchan for emotional and practical support, she gradually gains confidence through friendships and responsibilities. Her empathy compels her to mediate conflicts and protect others, even at personal risk. Council members, especially Kanade, shield her from her own missteps, and she repays this with fierce loyalty. Her growth involves confronting insecurities about being undervalued and embracing her role in upholding the academy’s ideals of freedom and happiness.
