During events in Magadha, he encounters King Ajatashatru, afflicted by excruciating boils. Through his spiritual power and presence alone, he heals the king. This act triggers Ajatashatru’s repentance for patricide and converts the monarch into a committed follower of his teachings.

His relationship with his cousin Devadatta is fraught with conflict due to Devadatta’s consuming jealousy and ambition. Devadatta orchestrates three assassination attempts: first, by rolling a boulder toward him, foiled by external intervention; second, by unleashing the violent elephant Nalagiri against him, only for the beast to kneel repentantly after being calmed by his enlightened aura; and third, by poisoning his own fingernail for a direct assault. This final plot fails when Devadatta, enraged after exposure and admonishment, bites the poisoned nail and succumbs to the toxin in despair.
