Description
Therru, whose true name is Tehanu, bears a large burn scar on the left side of her face, a permanent reminder of severe abuse and abandonment by her birth parents. She has brown hair, typically styled with two front strands tied by red ribbons and shorter hair in the back. Her usual attire is a dark pink jumper over a lighter pink long-sleeved shirt, often worn with a white apron.

Rescued from the streets by Tenar, Therru lives on Tenar's farm, assisting with animal care and domestic tasks. Tenar serves as her foster mother and primary emotional anchor, offering stability after years of trauma. Therru struggles with deep-seated distrust, particularly toward strangers and men, often retreating into silence and defensive behavior. Her personality blends toughness and independence with a capacity for kindness, which surfaces primarily around animals and the few individuals who earn her fragile trust.

Her initial interactions with Prince Arren are hostile, sparked by his nihilistic claim that "life is nothing to me"—a direct challenge to her own fierce valuation of life. Though Arren rescues her from slave traders led by Hare, she rejects his help afterward, demonstrating her ingrained wariness. Their relationship slowly transforms through shared vulnerability: Arren confesses his patricide, and Therru gradually reveals her true identity. This bond deepens into mutual reliance, culminating in her sharing her true name, Tehanu, and expressing hope for his return after he departs to atone for his crimes.

Therru’s defining nature is her existence as a Dragon-Lady, a human-dragon hybrid. She is a child of the ancient dragon Kalessin. Her immortality proves pivotal when the sorcerer Cob strangles her; she resurrects and transforms into her dragon form—gray-scaled, winged, with red eyes and horns—before incinerating him. This act restores balance to the world.

Her character arc emphasizes resilience and purpose. She articulates her motivation as living to "give life to someone else," reflecting Tenar’s profound influence. Her journey culminates in embracing her identity as Tehanu, reconciling her human experiences with her draconic destiny.
