Description
Prince Arren of Enlad, known as Raíz, is a seventeen-year-old prince tormented by a shadow manifestation born from his fear of death and inner darkness, a consequence of the world's Balance collapsing. He kills his father, the King, steals the royal sword, and flees the palace, plunging him into profound guilt and a sense of being pursued by an ominous presence. This presence later materializes as a spectral doppelgänger embodying his fractured psyche.

Rescued from wolves by the archmage Sparrowhawk, Arren travels to Hort Town. There, he intervenes when a girl named Therru is chased by slavers, though his act stems more from a death-wish than heroism—a fact Therru perceives immediately. Captured by the slaver Hare and losing his sword, Arren is rescued again by Sparrowhawk. They journey to the farm of Tenar, Sparrowhawk's friend, where Therru also resides. Confessing his patricide to Therru and revealing his inner turmoil and fear of the pursuing presence, Arren feels he endangers Tenar and Therru and attempts to leave secretly.

Confronted again by his doppelgänger, he flees and collapses. Taken to a castle by the warlock Lord Cob, Arren is manipulated; Cob exploits his vulnerability to learn his true name, Lebannen, gaining control over him. Cob sends the controlled Arren to kill Sparrowhawk, who came to rescue the captured Tenar. Sparrowhawk breaks Cob's control over Arren, freeing him, but is captured himself.

Therru, given Arren's sword by Sparrowhawk and having encountered his doppelgänger (which revealed itself as Arren's inner light and shared his true name with her), finds Arren in the castle. She instills hope, calling him Lebannen and confiding her own true name, Tehanu. Empowered by this connection and acceptance of his identity, Arren confronts Cob. He successfully unsheathes his father's previously sealed magical sword and uses it to sever Cob's hand, breaking the warlock's power. After Cob captures the transformed dragon Tehanu (Therru) and is killed by her, Arren is rescued.

After these events, Arren informs Therru he will return to Enlad to face judgment for his father's murder but promises to return to her someday. He departs with Sparrowhawk, signifying his acceptance of responsibility and the beginning of his path toward atonement.
