Description
Umehito Nekozawa, a student at Ouran Academy, presides over the Black Magic Club, his identity shrouded beneath a hooded cloak and the eerie presence of Beelzenef, a cat-shaped puppet. Descended from the Russian Tokarev Dynasty—a lineage tied to historic firearms manufacturing and inherited wealth—he battles severe photophobia, a condition rendering sunlight agonizing. To shield himself, he dons dark clothing, a black wig, and a hooded cape, branding those who expose him to light as “murderers.” Beneath this gothic guise lies pale blonde hair, blue eyes, and an uncanny resemblance to Tamaki Suoh, a likeness that once led his younger sister, Kirimi, to confuse the two.

Driven by Kirimi’s fear of darkness and animals, Umehito enlists the Host Club’s aid to reinvent himself as a “princely brother,” enduring grueling light-exposure training. His resolve peaks when he braves sunlight to rescue her from a stray cat, collapsing afterward but securing her acceptance. This bond threads through his expanded manga role, including moments as an honorary “eighth host,” a beach estate visit where indoor lights overwhelm him, and an airport scheme aiding Tamaki’s reunion with his mother. Post-graduation, he studies literature at Ouran University, retaining his gothic aesthetic with a hoodie and tinted contacts.

His relationships weave complexity: a fraught yet evolving connection with Tamaki culminates in a tearful graduation farewell; the Hitachiin twins transition from tormenting him with flashlights to supporting his efforts with Kirimi; Reiko Kanazuki, his Black Magic Club subordinate, aids his rituals; and Renge Houshakuji’s relentless training pushes his limits. By the manga’s close, Kirimi embraces occultism, donning a dark cloak and stuffed cat mirroring his style—a testament to their mended bond. Though temporary triumphs over his phobia occur, Umehito remains steadfast, championing the Black Magic Club with Beelzenef puppets and “cursed” voodoo dolls, his legacy enduring in shadows.
