Kanabun is an adolescent hermaphrodite performer in a traveling freak show, initially abandoned due to his condition before finding a place with the circus. He maintains a twisted sexual relationship with the owner, Mr. Arashi, willingly engaging in BDSM and oculolinctus, and implies involvement with other troupe members.
As the circus fire breather, Kanabun exhibits extreme cruelty, particularly towards Midori, an orphaned girl working there. After she adopts puppies for comfort, Kanabun discovers them, smashes their heads against the ground, cooks their meat, and serves it to her and the troupe without their knowledge. Midori realizes the truth during the meal, experiencing profound horror.
Kanabun further abuses Midori through sexual violence. Following her rape by another performer, he masturbates in front of her while taunting her and subsequently rapes her offscreen. His personality blends childlike traits with psychopathy, marked by vanity, sadism, and a lack of empathy. He derives pleasure from inflicting suffering, including his own submission to Mr. Arashi's fetishes.
Kanabun's appearance varies across adaptations. In the original manga and 1992 anime, he has a black bob haircut with a ponytail, chipped front teeth, and wears clothing like a white tank top with a red star, blue leggings, or a purple kimono. The 2016 live-action film alters his design, giving him short dyed hair, a purple bow, and loose white and pink attire. His character development includes an identity crisis where he cuts his ponytail to appear more masculine before departing the circus with the magician Masamitsu.
After the circus disbands, Kanabun ceases cross-dressing and antagonizing Midori. He later appears in her hallucination alongside other former troupe members, collectively mocking her before vanishing as their laughter echoes. In the 2016 film adaptation, his actions are notably less severe; he does not rape Midori, with that abuse attributed solely to another character.
