Joe starts as an ordinary movie enthusiast who idolizes superhero Captain Blue. During a theater date, a villain emerges from the screen to kidnap his girlfriend Silvia. Captain Blue's mecha, Six Majin (also called Robo Six or Six Machine), pulls Joe into Movieland. There, Captain Blue gifts him a V-Watch, enabling transformation into a superhero by shouting "Henshin-a-Go-Go, Baby!" This grants Joe VFX powers mimicking film techniques: slowing time (Slow), accelerating movement (Mach Speed), and zooming for stronger attacks (Zoom In).
Initially laid-back and easily distracted—especially by cheeseburgers—Joe often lacks seriousness. His early hero persona features playful bravado, flashy combat, and enthusiastic catchphrases. Rival Alastor coins the name "Viewtiful Joe" by mishearing "Beautiful" during their fight, which Joe adopts as his heroic identity.
Joe battles two main foes: the Jadow organization in season one and the alien Gedow empire in season two. His quest to rescue Silvia from Jadow expands as he uncovers conspiracies. A pivotal reveal shows Jadow's leader is Captain Blue, now corrupted and renamed King Blue. This betrayal triggers Joe's temporary breakdown, but allies restore his resolve, leading him to defeat King Blue using Six Majin.
In season two, Joe and Silvia—now superheroine Sexy Silvia (or Go-Go Silvia in some dubs)—confront Gedow. Its leader, the Black Emperor, is revealed as Joe's father Jet Black, corrupted by a Black V-Watch and Black Film. Jet Black directs Gedow's campaign to corrupt movies and alter endings. Joe and Silvia free him from this influence, resolving the conflict.
Joe evolves significantly through these trials, keeping his optimism and theatrical flair while becoming more focused and resilient. This growth sharpens after his young sidekick Captain Blue Jr. (Junior) sacrifices himself, igniting Joe's tranquil fury. He then decisively defeats villains Charles the Third, Hulk Davidson, and Gran Bruce.
His relationships shape his development: his dynamic with Silvia shifts from damsel-in-distress to battle couple partnership, emphasizing mutual support. He forms a badass and child duo with Junior, mentoring him while valuing his contributions. His rivalry with Alastor—who shifts from antagonist to occasional ally—adds complexity, as Alastor's relentless challenge tests and hones Joe's skills.
Joe's family background unfolds: his father is Jet Black, mother Junko, and sister Jasmine—all first names starting with "J." This connection extends to Silvia, whose father is Captain Blue, intertwining their histories. Joe's genre savviness from movie knowledge helps anticipate plot twists and enemy tactics, marking his evolution from fan to strategic hero.
