Description
Hayato Kazami unexpectedly became the registered driver of the Cyber Formula car Asurada GSX after retrieving it from thieves. His data imprinted on its security system, compelling the Sugo Grand Prix team to accept him despite his complete lack of racing experience. This granted him a Super License, making him Cyber Formula's youngest competitor at the time.
Starting as an inexperienced 14-year-old, he struggled with overconfidence and near-nonexistent racing skills. He claimed his first victory at the 2015 British Grand Prix. Overcoming major hurdles, including a mid-season switch from the Asurada GSX to the Super Asurada 01, he won his debut championship that year with three wins and six podiums. In 2016, he defended his title despite early setbacks, famously urging rival Osamu Sugo to continue racing despite a medical condition in the final round and narrowly defeating multiple opponents at the finish.
His career spanned Sugo Asurada (2015–2017), Sugo Winners (2018–2019), Sugo Grand Prix (2020–2021), and Sugo GIO Grand Prix (2022 onward). He secured further championships in 2020 and 2021, earning the moniker "young emperor of the circuit" for his supremacy. His driving style evolved from heavy reliance on Asurada's AI to refined technical skill and strategic adaptability, a shift accelerated after recovering from serious injuries sustained in the Zero Zone crash.
Personality-wise, he matured from a bright but impulsive and occasionally selfish youth into a more relaxed yet fiercely competitive driver. Early shortcomings included excessive focus on rivals and emotional outbursts during poor performances, traits he overcame through experience. By 2022, he demonstrated significant mental and physical maturity, engaging in a season-long duel with Bleed Kaga that ended in a narrow championship loss.
Off the track, he maintained a long-term romantic relationship with Asuka Sugo, eventually marrying her. His interactions with rivals like Kaga, Osamu Sugo, and Karl Lichter von Randoll transformed from intense competition into mutual respect, particularly with Kaga, whose rivalry defined Hayato's later career. His bond with the AI system Asurada deepened significantly, evolving from a purely functional partnership to one reflecting mutual growth and understanding.
