Description
Juan Rico, who answers to Johnnie, is an affluent Buenos Aires high school graduate lacking clear direction. He enlists in the Federal Military Service primarily to follow Carmen Ibañez, his romantic interest now in the Space Navy. This decision sparks significant family conflict: his mother responds with emotional distress and physical disapproval, while his initially resistant father later discloses that their company, Rico Foods, supplies military rations, hinting at looming conflict. Rico passes aptitude tests confirming his suitability for the Mobile Infantry.

Rico endures grueling basic training under Sergeant Charles Zim, mastering physical conditioning, weapons handling (including knives), powered armor operation, and absolute obedience. During wildfire suppression exercises, he disobeys a direct recall order to rescue a trapped civilian woman. While morally sound, this insubordination earns him physical punishment and intensive corrective drills, underscoring military discipline. Training intensifies after a catastrophic alien attack annihilates Buenos Aires, killing his mother and approximately one million others.

This personal loss accelerates Rico's maturity. He processes grief partly through letter writing, including attempts to contact Carmen. Military service exposes him to combat's harsh realities and the severe consequences of failure or disobedience, exemplified by fellow recruit Ted Hendrick's expulsion. Rico perseveres, graduates, and joins an active Mobile Infantry unit. He undergoes accelerated planetary assault training on the moon preparing for major operations against the aliens. His interactions with Carmen grow strained, reflecting their diverging paths.

Rico deploys into combat, participating in the Terran Federation's counter-offensive, notably the massive assault on the alien home world, Klendathu. Equipped with powered armor and utilizing capsule drop deployment, he engages in fierce ground combat against the hostile entities. His journey concludes fully integrated into the military structure, actively engaged in the war effort.
