Niño Panda is the young panda cub featured in the anime Panda! Go, Panda!, appearing in both the original 1972 short and its 1973 sequel. He is discovered sleeping on the doorstep of the little girl Mimiko, who is living alone while her grandmother is away. Niño Panda quickly forms a bond with Mimiko, and soon his father, Papanda, arrives, leading to the formation of an unconventional family in which Mimiko becomes Niño Panda’s mother and Papanda becomes her father. Niño Panda is characterized by his boundless curiosity, adventurous spirit, and mischievous nature. He loves to explore his surroundings and often gets into playful trouble, such as sneaking into Mimiko’s school or wandering off during a walk. Despite his naughty streak, he is deeply affectionate and serves as the emotional heart of the family. His primary motivation is to be close to Mimiko and his father, enjoying the simple life they build together in their bamboo grove home. He shares a close, caregiving relationship with Mimiko, who looks after him, and a warm, doting bond with Papanda. In the sequel, Niño Panda befriends a tiger cub named Tiny and participates in rescuing circus animals during a flood. Throughout the story, he remains a playful, good-natured character whose antics drive much of the plot. Niño Panda can understand human speech and communicates through expressive sounds and gestures. He possesses no supernatural abilities, but his fearless curiosity and loving nature make him a central and memorable figure in the story.
