Description
Meisuke Nueno, known as Nube, teaches homeroom for Class 5-3 at Dōmori Elementary School. Innate spiritual abilities in his childhood attracted supernatural entities and bullying. His teacher Minako sacrificed her life to exorcise a powerful snake demon possessing him, inspiring his career path. During his first teaching job, he encountered the same demon that killed Minako. To save a possessed student, he sealed the demon and Minako's lingering spirit into his left hand, replacing it with the malformed "Oni no Te" (Demon's Hand). This incident caused his resignation. His mother's death from poverty and his father's abandonment shaped his distrust of materialism and commitment to selfless exorcism.
Nube appears as a young man with short black hair, thick eyebrows, and red eyes, usually dressed in a black suit and white shirt. He conceals the Oni no Te under a black glove; revealed, it shows long black nails and a grotesque, demonic appearance. He stands 178 cm tall and weighs 68 kg.
Financially unstable due to refusing payment for exorcisms and habitual pachinko gambling, he lives austerely, often relying on school meals or student generosity. Despite comedic flaws like clumsiness and awkwardness around women—particularly colleague Ritsuko Takahashi—he demonstrates unwavering dedication to protecting children. He exhibits a dual nature: lighthearted and impulsive daily, yet fiercely principled and heroic during supernatural threats. He initially rejected romantic advances from the yōkai Yukime due to their age difference, though this evolved. He maintains a strict moral boundary, never directing inappropriate attention toward students.
His primary ability, the Oni no Te, channels a sealed oni's power for combat, spirit communication, or freeing trapped souls. He supplements this with spiritual tools: the Sutra Book of the White-Robed Goddess for sealing, a crystal ball for revealing invisible entities, and prayer beads for offensive or summoning rituals. He developed techniques like Youshin no Jutsu (projecting a spiritual body during sleep) and kudagitsune creation. After temporarily losing the Oni no Te in the sequel *Jigoku Sensei Nube Neo*, he retrained under the yōkai Daitengu to regain it, acquiring "Oni no Te Neo"—a spiritual energy blaster that exhausts him after use.
His relationships center on students he protects relentlessly, notably Hiroshi Tateno, Kyoko Inaba, and Miki Hosokawa. Kyoko shares a deeper connection, hinted as a reincarnated partner from a past life. Allies include Yukime, a yuki-onna he rescued years prior who later becomes his wife; and Tamamo, a fox spirit who transitions from antagonist to ally. In the spin-off *Reibaishi Izuna: Ascension*, he sacrifices himself to save students from the yōkai Byakko, though an alternate timeline later spares him. His eventual marriage to Yukime concludes with them relocating to Kyushu.
Character development spans multiple series. In the original manga (1993–1999), he resolves supernatural incidents episodically while confronting deeper threats like the oni siblings Baki, Minki, and their brother Zekki. The sequel *Nube Neo* (2014–2018) sees him return to Dōmori Elementary a decade later, mentoring a now-adult Kyoko as a teacher and mastering Oni no Te Neo. In *Nube S* (2018–2021) and the ongoing *Nube Kai* (2025–present), he intervenes across timelines to rescue students trapped in ghost-story realms. The film *Jigoku Sensei Nube: Gozen 0 toki Nube Shisu* (1997) depicts him battling the demonic clown Pierrot to save a manipulated student. His role in the *Reibaishi Izuna* spinoffs involves multiverse sacrifices and timeline corrections.
