Akko is an energetic and imaginative elementary school student. Her father works as a newscaster, and her mother creates picture books. She deeply treasures a small mirror, a gift from her father, treating it with great care. When her mother accidentally breaks this mirror, Akko respectfully buries it in her yard instead of throwing it away, revealing her sentimental attachment to meaningful objects. Later, during a dream on a night with a full moon, Akko meets a mystical entity—variously portrayed as the Queen of the Mirror Kingdom or a spirit. Rewarding her respectful act, this entity gifts her a magical replacement compact mirror. Specific chants, "tekumaku mayakon, tekumaku mayakon" and "lamipus lamipus lu lu lu lu lu," accompany the mirror, enabling her to transform into any form she desires, forming the basis of her adventures. Akko's personality blends childlike exuberance with occasional bouts of arrogance, though her actions are often driven by compassion. She maintains friendships, like with Moko, while navigating rivalries such as with classmate Taisho, who secretly likes her. Her adventures frequently involve school life, magical mishaps, and interactions with characters including her cat Shippona and Taisho's associates, Gyoro and Goma. Different adaptations introduce subtle variations. The 1969 anime features adversaries like the Dark King and elements like a talking parrot. The 1988 version adds dynamics such as her relationship with Kio, the Prince of Mirror Country, and an enigmatic elderly figure. The 1998 series expands her social world with romantic elements, notably through Eiji Haraguchi, who becomes her boyfriend and a rival to Taisho. Her core narrative remains consistent: a young girl whose respectful treatment of a broken mirror leads to magical abilities, resulting in lighthearted misadventures centered on transformation, friendship, and personal growth.
