Konakijiji, also known as Crybaby Geezer, emerges from Japanese folklore as a mountain-dwelling yōkai who mimics a crying infant to lure travelers in regions like Tokushima Prefecture. When picked up, his weight increases drastically, from at least 188 kilograms to potentially several tons, crushing victims. Folklore variations include the one-legged Gogya-Naki, whose cries cause earthquakes, and the Konaki-Babaa, an old woman-faced infant with similar weight-changing abilities.
He possesses a baby's body with the face of a mustached, droopy-eyebrowed old man, typically wearing a Kintarō apron and a *mino* (straw raincoat), standing 140 cm tall. His weight shifts dramatically between 25 kg and 2 tons using his stone-skin ability. Some depictions show him with a blackened front tooth.
A core member of the Kitarō Family and one of the 47 Yōkai Warriors representing Tokushima Prefecture in the 2007 anime, Konakijiji fights by clinging to adversaries and turning his skin to stone to immobilize or crush them. He first appeared in Shigeru Mizuki’s 1961 rental manga *A Walk to Hell* and debuted prominently in *The Great Yōkai War*, sacrificing himself to drown enemies like Frankenstein or Wolfman before reappearing to establish his recurring role.
His personality blends comic relief and vulnerability. Over 3,100 years old, he is absent-minded, frequently sleeps, and frequently indulges in sake – leading to troubles like being drugged during *The Great Yōkai Trial* or losing his youth to Neko-Shō while intoxicated. Despite this, he shows resourcefulness, owning sophisticated human-world items like a personal computer, accumulating wealth, and occasionally wearing elegant clothing. His relationship with Sunakake-Babaa features romantic undertones; they work closely together, and she exhibits jealousy over his interactions with other women. While earlier media implied an unseen wife, *Yōkai Sen Monogatari* confirms his affection for Sunakake-Babaa.
In the film *Gegege no Kitarō: Gekitotsu!! Ijigen Yōkai no Daihanran* (1986), based on the 1985 anime, he participates in an interdimensional conflict, aligning with his established role as a Kitarō Family ally against supernatural threats.
His background includes distant kinship with human politician Deputy Prime Minister Kinkaku, who acknowledges their relation. He resides in the GeGeGe Forest or Yōkai Apartments, reflecting integration into both yōkai and human societies. Konakijiji’s longevity and folkloric adaptability ensure his presence across decades of *Gegege no Kitarō* media as a strategic yet endearing protector of the yōkai-human balance.
