Description
Sasha, also known under the false identity Mio Sanada, is a hybrid human-Iscandarian individual. She is the daughter of the Earthling Mamoru Kodai and Starsha, the last Queen of Iscandar, making her the niece of Susumu Kodai. Conceived in 2199, she was maintained in an incorporeal, energy-based form until her birth in late 2205 following Iscandar’s destruction.
After being born aboard the Earth Federation carrier Asuka, she was placed under strict quarantine for two years. Commander Shiro Sanada, her late father’s best friend, headed her observation team. To shield her from the Dezarium empire, which sought her for inheriting her mother’s unique elemental abilities, she was given the cover identity of Mio Sanada, presented as Shiro Sanada’s niece. She was relocated to the secret Icarus Observatory, the same facility that housed the space battleship Yamato.
Her daily care was managed by Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi, who acted as her foster mother. Niimi oversaw her diet, exercise, and sleep with the help of an autonomous sub-computer. Chronologically less than two years old, she exhibited advanced language comprehension well before she began to speak. She displayed a playful disposition and formed strong attachments to Shiro Sanada, Kaoru Niimi, and her uncle, Susumu Kodai.
A critical moment occurred when she was kidnapped by Dezarian Major Alfon during an infiltration of the Yamato. She and Niimi were taken aboard the Dezarian battleship Grodez and placed in a sleep-inducing pod. Discovered two weeks later by a Galman-Garmillas fleet, she had undergone rapid physical maturation to the apparent age of 17.
In her original continuity, she possesses clairvoyant abilities, including the capacity to foresee near-future events and her own fate. She also shares her mother’s power to project post-death images as communication. A strong connection exists with her uncle, Susumu Kodai, marked by hints of jealousy regarding his love for Yuki Mori. She ultimately sacrifices herself to create an opening that allows the Yamato to destroy the Dezarium planet, perishing before the Wave Motion Gun is fired.
Following Dezarium’s destruction, her spirit contacts the Yamato crew, bidding them farewell and urging them to continue protecting Earth before ascending to the afterlife. In the narrative of Be Forever Yamato, she chooses to remain on future Earth, believing her role as a hybrid lies there, and later aids the Yamato by sabotaging the control system for the bomb threatening Earth.
Her appearance changes after rapid growth. As a toddler, she had blonde hair and wore a pale blue dress. As a young woman, she has long blonde hair, amber eyes, and a light-blue body suit with design elements reminiscent of Iscandarian clothing.
