Description
Wataru Mikumo, a Japanese researcher, spearheads development of the Space Ranger project—an orbital laser defense system intended to deter nuclear warfare. He collaborates closely with American scientist Burt Gains, both wary of the system’s risk of intensifying global arms proliferation. After Soviet operatives abduct Gains, who later perishes in a failed U.S. rescue operation, Mikumo rises to lead the initiative.

His professional trajectory intertwines with a developing connection to Laura, originally portrayed as Gains’ sister. As global tensions erupt into open conflict, Mikumo departs Tokyo, where Laura remains, to command Space Ranger’s activation from Vandenberg Air Force Base. Amidst escalating hostilities, he directs real-time countermeasures against Soviet missile launches, culminating in a desperate bid to neutralize a MIRV-equipped ICBM barrage threatening Los Angeles.

During the crisis, Mikumo repairs a malfunctioning laser array and repositions the Voyager spacecraft to eliminate the last surviving warhead, critically damaging the vessel and nearly dying in the attempt. Rendered unconscious in orbit, he is recovered by a U.S.-Soviet joint salvage team. His intervention proves pivotal in arresting the nuclear crisis, paralleling worldwide anti-war efforts.

An international adaptation reframes his rapport with Laura as romantic and excises his Japanese heritage, rebranding him as Robert Manning with a simplified backstory. These deviations do not affect the original narrative, which underscores Mikumo’s technical expertise and moral conflict as a Japanese scientist navigating Cold War geopolitics.
