Description
Jan Kugo, also known as Jan Coog in some adaptations, is a red-suited cyborg and one of three primary guardians assigned to protect Princess Aurora on her mission to restore the Galaxy Energy. His character draws inspiration from the monkey-demon Sun Wukong of *Journey to the West*, with "Kugo" forming an anagram of that name.

Originally human, Jan Kugo volunteered for cybernetic enhancement to better serve humanity. After his transformation, he was relegated to painting outdated missiles—a demotion that fostered his rebellious and unpredictable nature. Discontent with these duties, and due to a perceived miscalculation in his programming by his creator Professor Dodge, he turned to destructive acts for amusement. Armed with his Astro-lance, a weapon that alters size and fires lasers, he unleashed chaos across the galaxy. This path led to his imprisonment inside an impenetrable transparent dome on the Moon by Dr. Kitty, the Empress.

He remained captive until Princess Aurora sought his release, requiring his strength for her mission. He initially refused after she disapproved of his lethal methods against space pirates, but reconsidered upon realizing the severity of the threats she faced. After consulting with Professor Dodge and Dr. Kitty, he pledged himself as her guardian.

Jan Kugo exhibits immense strength, speed, agility, and a short temper. His primary weapon, the Astro-lance, can disintegrate targets. He pilots a personal spacecraft called the Starcrow. In the second season, rebranded as *SF Saiyuki Starzinger II*, he gains the ability to grow giant or shrink tiny at will.

His relationship with Princess Aurora is pivotal. Though fiercely loyal, his violent tendencies often conflict with her pacifism. This tension peaks when he attacks a carrier ship he believes hostile, later discovered to hold child refugees. A temporary rift forms, though his innocence is confirmed when the villain Golga is exposed as the true culprit.

Beneath his rough exterior lies a strong sense of justice. He is deeply moved by emotional encounters, such as meeting a young boy named Marta who resembles his former self. Marta’s death strengthens his resolve to oppose evil. Evolving from a solitary destructive figure, he becomes a devoted protector, committed to safeguarding the princess and the galaxy.
