Susanoo, youngest child of creator deities Izanagi and Izanami, struggles to comprehend his mother's death and subsequent departure to heaven despite his father's explanations. This loss fuels his determined quest to find Izanami, defying Izanagi's warnings of impossibility.
His personality blends spirited mischievousness with deep emotion, prone to violent outbursts when grieving or frustrated, like shattering property upon learning of Izanami's death before fleeing. Yet he shows compassion, rescuing his friend Akahana the rabbit from the tiger Tarō and aiding others in distress.
Accompanied by Akahana, Susanoo journeys through mythical realms. In the Land of Night, ruled by his brother Tsukuyomi the Crystal Prince, he seeks guidance but is refused. Tsukuyomi traps him in ice before gifting him a protective crystal ball as they depart.
They next traverse the volcanic Land of Fire, suffering drought under a Fire God. Susanoo battles this entity; his sword attacks prove ineffective as they multiply the foe. Using Tsukuyomi's crystal ball, Susanoo defeats the Fire God. The benevolent giant Titanbō then joins them.
Their path leads to the Land of Light, governed by his sister Amaterasu the Sun Goddess. Susanoo's attempts to help locals inadvertently cause significant damage, provoking Amaterasu to withdraw into a cave, plunging the land into darkness. Rituals coax her partial emergence, and Susanoo is judged and banished alongside his companions.
Exiled, they arrive in Izumo Province. Susanoo encounters Princess Kushinada, developing immediate, strong affection partly because her beauty recalls his mother. Learning she is the last surviving daughter after seven sisters were sacrificed to the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi, Susanoo resolves to protect her and slay the monster, motivated by his infatuation and desire to end Orochi's terror.
The confrontation with Orochi forms the climax. Susanoo employs the strategy of intoxicating the creature with vast sake. Though weakened, Orochi remains fiercely combative. Susanoo battles each head sequentially with javelins and his sword, aided by a flying horse sent by Amaterasu. His sword breaks against Orochi's scales. At this critical moment, the protective red teardrop necklace given by his mother transforms into a magical dagger. Susanoo uses this dagger to deliver the final blow, scaling the last head to vanquish the beast.
Visually, Susanoo appears with a distinctively abstract, geometric design using simple shapes like a rounded head and tapered limbs. This aesthetic facilitates fluid animation, emphasizing his physicality and movements during action and emotional expressions. His design integrates seamlessly with the film's modernist background art, featuring bold colors and lacking heavy shading.
