Príncipe Susano, youngest child of divine creators Izanagi and Izanami, possesses immense physical strength showcased by effortlessly defeating a tiger threatening his rabbit companion, Akahana. This power initially manifests as unchecked impulsiveness and playful mischief.
The death of his mother, Izanami, becomes his central catalyst. Overwhelmed by grief, he unleashes violent tantrums, destroying objects. Despite Izanagi's stern warnings about the afterlife's impossibility, Susano remains defiantly determined to find her. His resolve solidifies when Izanami's spirit appears in a vision, bestowing a crimson protective amulet and describing her peaceful existence in heaven. This fuels his quest across mythical realms.
Constructing a boat, he sails with the reluctant Akahana. His journey leads first through the Land of Night, ruled by his brother Tsukuyomi (the Crystal Prince), then the Land of Light governed by his sister Amaterasu (the Sun Goddess). He seeks their guidance to reach heaven, but both refuse, emphasizing the journey's futility. These segments highlight his persistence against divine discouragement and physical trials, like battling a colossal sea monster en route.
Returning to earthly Izumo, he encounters Princess Kushinada. Struck by her resemblance to Izanami and learning of her seven sisters sacrificed to the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi, Susano shifts focus from his personal quest to protecting her. This marks significant evolution: his formidable strength and impulsiveness redirect toward altruistic defense. He allies with Titanbō, a gentle giant from the Land of Fire, to confront the serpent.
The climactic battle against Orochi tests his strategic ingenuity and combat prowess. He intoxicates the beast with sake and employs javelins alongside a sword gifted by Amaterasu. When Orochi’s final head shatters his sword, his mother’s amulet transforms into a magical dagger, enabling the killing blow. This victory, achieved through inherited divine power and his mother’s protection, resolves the threat and symbolizes his internal reconciliation with her loss.
Following Orochi's defeat, he returns to Izanagi. Acceptance of his mother’s permanent absence blossoms into a matured understanding of responsibility. His journey transitions him from a grief-stricken, defiant child into a compassionate protector who channels his strength for others' sake.
