Description
Coda begins as a domestic cat living with her young owner, Trio, in a village bordering a forest. When Nazi-like soldiers destroy their home, Coda survives and flees alongside Trio. Soldiers capture them on a bridge; Trio is thrown into the river while Coda escapes, joined by a donkey named Largo.
Coda possesses the ability to communicate with other animals, understanding human speech and conveying her own thoughts to them. Her primary goal remains finding Trio. Seeking refuge with Largo at an abandoned inn, they meet Allegro, an elderly dog abandoned by enemy soldiers. Allegro translates between Coda and Largo, enabling them to form a plan: create a musical group to locate Trio, leveraging his known passion for music.
The group later rescues Minuet, a hen escaping forced labor at the invaders' castle. Together, the four animals discover Rondo, a wounded alien peace emissary. Rondo grants each a transformation leaf, allowing them to assume humanoid forms while retaining animal traits like ears. In this new state, Coda becomes a flutist.
Adagio, a puppet shop owner, hires the transformed animals as musicians. They gain fame as the "Bremen 4" band. Yet, Coda remains haunted by Trio's absence. She eventually spots him as a war orphan living on the streets under Black Jack's guardianship. Trio rejects Coda and the band, accusing them of media opportunism and neglecting the oppressed. This encounter intensifies Coda's internal conflict about their mission.
Colonel Presto, leader of the invading force, imprisons the Bremen 4 after they protest Trio's arrest. Imprisoned alongside Adagio and Trio, Minuet reverts to animal form to aid their escape, using laid eggs as a distraction. Coda is recaptured during the breakout. Presto develops an unexpected fascination with her, sparing her execution and confessing his affection. Coda exploits this vulnerability to seize Presto's control ring, reverting to cat form to evade him.
Coda reunites with the others outside the castle. They join the guerrilla assault on Presto's stronghold. Following Presto's defeat, Coda and her companions commit to spreading Rondo's message of peace among Earth's animals.
