Description
Rui Kino, known by his personal name Fafnir, served as a Processor in the First Platoon of the Spearhead Squadron commanded by Shinei Nouzen. He transferred into the unit on April 1, RY 367, in the First Ward after prior service in the Scale Squadron, marking his fourth year of military service. Personnel photos were updated upon his arrival, including a group photo with Chise and Touma taken at Shinei's request.
Kino participated in the squadron's cherry blossom party on April 5, socializing with Daiya and Haruto while watching shooting stars, though he refused to confess a crush. During downtime, he openly read pornographic magazines. He fought alongside the squadron in numerous battles against the Legion, witnessing the deaths of comrades like Mina, Kujo, Kaie, Daiya, Lecca, Mikuri, Myna, and Shuri.
On May 12, Kino was on cleaning duty with Chise, Haruto, Raiden, Tohzan, and Touma, engaging in a hockey-like game that provoked violent retaliation from Raiden. Later that day, Kino and Theo joined Haruto in impersonating their former Handler's cries. During a sharpshooter tournament with Haruto and Tohzan on May 29, he listened dispassionately to Handler-One's conversation with Shinei about future goals after a mission.
On June 13, Kino played a board game with Chise, Kuroto, and Tohzan, laughing at Kaie calling another character a virgin. He covered the fourth squad during the June 15 battle where Kaie died and remained silent when Theo lashed out at Handler-One afterward. The next day, he played basketball with Chise, Daiya, Haruto, Raiden, and Theo, attempting to block Haruto, before joining another board game session. Kino gasped in horror upon hearing Kaie's voice among the Legion forces on June 24.
Passing the site of their cherry blossom party during a mission on July 27, Kino reminisced about the event before fighting in the battle where Daiya and Lecca died. He enjoyed the fireworks and gun salute for fallen comrades on August 25. Kino was killed in action on August 27 during an artillery ambush alongside Chise, Touma, and Kuroto; shrapnel from an explosion that destroyed Chise's unit immediately downed his nearby Fafnir unit.
Kino respected Shinei as squadron captain and valued being part of his unit. He initially held negative views of Handler-One (Vladilena Milizé), using derogatory terms like "pig with big breasts" and assuming she was an ugly career woman who couldn't marry. The squadron unanimously endorsed Raiden Shuga as vice-captain. His associated flower in official media was the Zinnia, and his personal name Fafnir referenced a dwarf-turned-dragon in Norse mythology.
