Sanrio created Pekkle, officially named Ahiru no Pekkle, in 1989. This male duck character debuted on products in February 1990. Originating from Cairns, Australia, Pekkle celebrates his birthday on July 27, making him a Leo. He possesses white feathers with orange legs, feet, and bill, highlighted by distinctive eyebrows that enhance his expressive, human-like appearance. Pekkle is typically seen wearing patterned t-shirts, frequently featuring fish designs. Gentle and kind-hearted, Pekkle exhibits a laid-back personality sometimes perceived as laziness. Despite being a duck, he struggles with swimming and takes lessons from his close fish friend, Pitch. Aspiring to be a lifeguard, Pekkle enjoys body surfing. His primary passion is dancing, especially tap dancing, which he performs to rhythmic beats, particularly when Pitch claps. Pekkle is also skilled at singing and playing keyboards. His significant relationships include his loyal girlfriend, Ruby (also known as Lucy), another domestic duck. Pekkle's circle of friends comprises Pitch (his fish swimming instructor), Chap (an aspiring surfer fish), Ran (a fish aspiring to model), Boot (a strength-focused duck), Chara (Boot’s admirer), Curl (a wealthy but anxious duck), and Frills (Ruby’s fashionable cousin). As keyboardist for the Sanrio boy band Hapidanbui since 2020, Pekkle promotes the message "It's okay! You're still you, I'm sure it will work." Within the group, he takes on a nurturing, "motherly" role, often tidying up or comforting others, and became leader through a rock-paper-scissors game. Pekkle also performs stand-up comedy with Pochacco at Sanrio Puroland. Pekkle achieved his highest Sanrio Character Ranking of 5th place in 1992. He dominated Hong Kong’s regional rankings for four consecutive years (2018–2021) and secured the International Award in 2020. His ranking notably rose to 11th in 2024, breaking a long-standing "Top 15 barrier." His media appearances include the manga "Ganbare! Pekkle," serialized for six and a half years in Sanrio’s "Ichigo Shimbun" magazine. Pekkle starred as Aladdin opposite Ruby's Princess Jasmine in the anime "Ahiru no Pekkle’s Aladdin and the Magic Lamp." He also features in cross-media collaborations, including donut lines with Floresta, printed cakes with Priroll, jewelry with Clover, and appearances in the Roblox game "My Hello Kitty Cafe."
