Kent Norton is a 9-year-old boy with black hair and black eyes. He is one of thirteen children stranded during the frantic evacuation from the Clayad colony in 2058 when hostile aliens called Astrogaters attack. Fleeing aboard the training combat ship Janous, they discover the Belwick colony is also destroyed. Kent and the others master piloting VIFAM mecha and operating the Janous's systems as they resolve to journey back to Earth alone.

His personality balances a strong enthusiasm for military matters with moments of recklessness, alongside an underlying kindness that emerges despite his occasional bluster. He shares a notable dynamic with another child, Sharon. During their voyage, the group encounters a damaged alien craft and learns one child among them is secretly an alien. They also discover their parents were captured and taken to the artificial satellite Tuat near the alien homeworld Kukto. Kent participates in the mission to reach Tuat, battling Astrogaters, coordinating with Earth military forces, and ultimately mounting a rescue attempt for their parents after learning they were moved to Kukto.
