Description
Grandma Hutto, an elderly resident of Volusia, Florida, shares a decades-long bond with the Baxter family, offering Ora Baxter and young Jody refuge for four years during Penny Baxter’s Confederate service in the Civil War. Her nurturing support contrasts with her spirited femininity—a blend of charm that captivates men and unsettles women. She hosts Penny and Jody warmly during town visits but clashes with Ora, their opposing natures sparking friction.

When the Forresters burn her home amid a feud between her son Oliver and Lem Forrester over Twink Weatherby, her pragmatism prevails: she invents a tale to quell retaliation, choosing communal stability over vengeance. This resolve leads her to abandon Florida’s rural strife, relocating to Boston with Oliver and Twink. Her departure leaves Penny and Jody bereft of her grounding influence, while Ora welcomes the distance.

Her history includes deflecting the advances of Easy Ozell, a Yankee suitor deemed unworthy by her independent standards. Sharp-witted and resilient, she voices candid opinions—critiquing Ora’s fashion or questioning heavenly allure—while navigating life with a balance of self-reliance and social diplomacy. Though physically absent, her legacy lingers, shaped by choices that harmonize personal grit with collective peace.
