Description
Operating under aliases including Skull and Black Ghost, Scarl leads the clandestine Black Ghost organization as its primary antagonist. He masks his true identity, presenting himself as a technologically advanced cyborg. His organization fuels global conflicts for profit through arms sales, leveraging significant technological resources and international reach.
Scarl conceived and authorized the 00 Cyborg project, orchestrating the abduction of vulnerable individuals – a terminally ill infant, a street fighter, a critically injured man, and others in dire straits – for forcible conversion into cyborg soldiers. Scientists like Dr. Isaac Gilmore were deceived into participating under false benevolent pretenses. After Gilmore discovered the truth and aided the cyborgs' escape, Scarl executed the scientists for their betrayal.
Visually defined by a skull-shaped helmet and black uniform featuring skeletal motifs, Scarl's appearance evolves across different portrayals, reflecting increasing cybernetic enhancement. Early depictions show standard humanoid features, while later versions reveal extensive mechanical modification. By the Yomi arc, he functions as a near-complete cyborg, capable of independent detachment for his head and limbs. Dr. Gilmore intervenes, weakening Scarl with the weapon and enabling Cyborg 009 to engage him; both fall into an exploding reactor. Scarl is presumed destroyed while 009 escapes via teleportation.
He resurfaces during the Yomi Kingdom arc, revealing subordination to the true leadership of Black Ghost: three disembodied brains representing "father," "mother," and "child." Inside the organization's core, a demonic statue, Scarl battles 009 one final time. The brains terminate Scarl with an energy beam for endangering the statue, declaring him a failure. Before their own destruction, they proclaim Black Ghost an eternal entity fueled by human malice, implying its inevitable resurgence.
