Description
Joe Shimamura, known as Cyborg 009, is a biracial individual of Japanese and unspecified foreign descent. Born to a Japanese mother who died shortly after his birth, he grew up in a Catholic orphanage in Kanazawa alongside friends Shin'ichi Ibaraki, Masaru Oyamada, and Mary Onodera. When Black Ghost operatives murdered the orphanage priest, Joe was falsely accused of the crime. Fleeing police custody, he was captured by Black Ghost and forcibly transformed into a cyborg soldier.

His cybernetic augmentations provide superhuman strength, durability, agility, and mechanical lungs enabling underwater breathing. His signature ability, "Acceleration Mode," activates via a molar switch, allowing movement at speeds that render surrounding objects motionless. Prolonged use causes severe physical strain and dangerous friction heat. During the "Conclusion GOD'S WAR" storyline, latent psychic abilities unlocked by 001 additionally grant him teleportation.

Personality-wise, he demonstrates strong leadership and protective instincts toward teammates, especially 001. Survivor's guilt haunts him over the deaths of his orphanage friends during Black Ghost's experiments. Childhood ostracization due to his biracial heritage fueled early anger and delinquency, but his team experiences forged resilience and a commitment to defending humanity despite his weaponized existence.

A significant emotional bond forms with 003 (Françoise Arnoul), with mutual romantic feelings implied across media. His dynamic with Dr. Gilmore shifts from dependency to mutual respect, evolving into a father-figure relationship.

Character development traces his journey from a reluctant fugitive burdened by trauma to a resolute leader embracing his role against global threats. This arc culminates in the "Underground Empire of Yomi," where he confronts Black Ghost leader Skull inside a giant statue. Defeating Skull—revealed as a brain piloting a robotic body—marks a turning point. Post-Black Ghost, he battles adversaries like supernatural entities and organizational remnants, steadfastly prioritizing peace and human life amid his own existential struggles as a cyborg.
