Description
Françoise Arnoul, designated Cyborg 003, began life as a French schoolgirl studying ballet in Paris. The Black Ghost organization abducted her, forcibly transforming her into a cyborg. As the sole female member of the 00 Cyborg team, her cybernetic enhancements focused on exceptional sensory capabilities: telescopic and x-ray vision with a 50 km range, enhanced hearing covering a 4 km square area, and other sensory perceptions. These made her invaluable for reconnaissance and navigation, though her physical strength and combat prowess remained lower than her teammates.

Gentle, polite, and deeply pacifistic, Françoise disliked her cyborg condition, feeling it diminished her humanity. Distress often came from perceiving distant suffering and conflict. She sought peaceful resolutions, empathized with enemies, and formed bonds like her friendship with the Mythos Cyborg Pan. Despite her aversion to violence, she eventually developed self-defense skills in savate and ju-jutsu. Her constant desire was a normal, peaceful life, leading her to retire periodically, pursuing ballet or university studies. This longing for normalcy sometimes caused reluctance to rejoin battles.

Before her abduction, she lived in a Paris boarding school, planning to reunite with her older brother Jean, a French Air Force pilot. Black Ghost targeted her specifically because she lived alone. After transformation and escape, she formed a close bond with Cyborg 009 (Joe Shimamura), initially seeing him as a protective older brother. This evolved into romantic attraction, becoming significant to her character. Instances like Joe showing attention to Helen during the "Yomi" arc caused Françoise jealousy and cold reactions. Her feelings deepened, with later storylines depicting her expressing a desire to "make love" to Joe and ultimately wishing to be his bride if reborn.

Her storylines involved significant trauma and evolution. In the "GOD'S WAR" adaptations, she initially lived quietly in Paris, attending university and ballet while developing a relationship with archaeology student Alain Deneuve. Supernatural threats interrupted this peace. During a Tokyo disaster, demonic creatures (oni) severely mutilated her, causing the loss of her eyes and right arm. Dr. Gilmore replaced them with a visibly mechanical arm capable of firing bullets and new robotic eyes, upgrades she deeply resented. Despair over these changes led to a suicidal crisis; she tore out the artificial eyes and attempted suicide. Comforted later by Ivan (Cyborg 001), she gained compensatory telepathic abilities, allowing her to "see" through mental imagery and communicate with the team over distances. She served as a telepathic field leader. In the "GOD'S WAR" finale, after the other cyborgs perished, she and Joe sacrificed themselves on a corrupted Earth. They transcended into a reborn "World of Light," where she reverted to her original human form, free to pursue her relationship with Joe.

In other continuities, like the CGI film trilogy "Call of Justice," she lived peacefully after UN Guardian troops assumed protective duties, until journalist Lucy Davenport's investigation into the Blessed group forced the cyborgs out of retirement. Her uniform here incorporated militaristic elements resembling stealth recon gear, blending design aspects like the high collar from "Cyborg 009 vs. Devilman" and the camouflaging suit from "Archaia."

Physically, she possessed a slender build, shoulder-length hair (ranging from blonde to brown or ginger in early depictions), blue eyes, and often wore a signature headband (red or pink). Her iconic uniform evolved across media: starting as double-breasted military style, later incorporating elements like a bright red armored vest in "Call of Justice" or a deep "samurai blue" uniform with a red scarf in "GOD'S WAR." Her eyes often changed color (e.g., bright green) when using her abilities. Outside her uniform, she appeared in fashionable clothing or a black turtleneck with a plaid skirt in early manga.

Relationships extended beyond Joe. She shared a background as a first-generation cyborg with Albert Heinrich (Cyborg 004) and Jet Link (Cyborg 002), having undergone cryogenic stasis for decades before reawakening. While interactions with Albert were limited on screen, he offered her comfort during emotional crises, like struggling to help teammates or grieving. She also cared for Ivan Whisky (Cyborg 001) and wounded teammates, fulfilling a nurturing role.
