Description
Pyunma, designated Cyborg 008, hails from Africa, with his specific homeland shifting across adaptations. Early sources often broadly cited "Africa" as his origin, while later publications and supplementary materials pinpointed Kenya. Alternate versions establish his background in the fictional Muamba Republic, where he fought as a freedom fighter against dictator Unbaba before capture by the Black Ghost organization.
Seized during combat, he endured extensive cybernetic conversion, becoming the eighth model in the 00 Cyborg series. His modifications specialized him for naval warfare, granting superhuman swimming, foot-mounted propulsion for high-speed underwater movement, and modified lungs enabling amphibious respiration. His reinforced body withstands extreme oceanic pressures down to 10,000 meters.
Before his transformation, Pyunma trained as a guerrilla fighter. This background fuels his tactical proficiency in battles, even beyond aquatic environments. Initial depictions featured racially insensitive caricatures, but his portrayal shifted after 1980 toward a less stereotypical appearance.
A defining mission saw his return to Muamba, confronting Black Ghost remnants manipulating conflict between Unbaba's regime and rebels. There, he discovered his former comrade, Mamado, transformed into a brainwashed cyborg operative. Despite attempts to reach him, Pyunma was forced to kill Mamado to protect himself and his teammates.
Severe combat injuries necessitated further cybernetic reconstruction. His upgraded body incorporated fish-scale plating for enhanced hydrodynamic efficiency and durability. He initially resisted this upgrade, fearing the loss of his humanity, but ultimately accepted its necessity for mission effectiveness.
Personality-wise, Pyunma exhibits determination and stoicism. He pilots the team’s amphibious vehicle, the Dolphin, maintaining a steadfast commitment to supporting his fellow cyborgs. Historically, he stands as one of the earliest black superheroes in manga, debuting in 1964.
