Description
Prince Zardoz, heir to Boazania’s fractured royalty, is the son of Prince La Gohl—later renamed Kentaro Goh or Ned Armstrong—a disgraced reformist who fought for equality between horned and hornless citizens. Orphaned at birth after his mother Rosalia’s death and ostracized for his father’s perceived betrayal, he was raised by maternal grandparents and later the Rii family, forging an unbreakable bond with childhood ally Katherine (Zandra in adaptations), who defended him from persecution and remained his steadfast confidant.
As a military commander, Zardoz executed Emperor Zambajil’s invasion of Earth, unaware his uncle orchestrated the campaign to eliminate him as a rival. His strategies combined biomechanical Beast Knights, psychological manipulation of subordinates, and sporadic acts of clemency, reflecting internal conflict over his father’s ideals. Ruthless yet principled, he adhered to a warrior’s honor—rejecting surrender in combat while respecting formidable foes.
Distinguished by shoulder-length ginger hair, pale complexion, and curved horns, Zardoz wore a dark blue mink coat and crimson bodysuit. His imperious facade concealed deep-seated shame over his heritage, often triggering violent outbursts when confronted with his father’s legacy. Once a merciless antagonist, his trajectory shifted upon discovering kinship with Voltes Team leader Kenichi (Steve Armstrong), his half-brother through their shared father, propelling him toward tragic anti-heroism.
His arc climaxed during Boazania’s collapse in a duel against Kenichi, where he sacrificed himself to absorb a grenade blast meant for his brother, acknowledging their bond in his final breath. This act of redemption echoed his lifelong struggle to reconcile Boazanian traditions—including animal sacrifices and prophecies tied to the god Godol—with his fractured identity.
Adaptations expanded his cunning subterfuge, such as infiltrating Earth under false identities, and intensified his fraught romance with Zandra. These iterations underscored his desperate quest for Zambajil’s approval, manifesting in heightened brutality toward allies and civilians, though fleeting remorse hinted at remnants of compassion beneath his tyranny.
