Description
General Do Bergan acts as a major antagonist within the Boazanian Empire. Emperor Zambajil sends him to Earth with a dual mission: publicly supporting Prince Heinel's invasion while secretly tasked with assassinating Heinel should the prince threaten Zambajil's rule. Bergan consistently conceals his identity behind a blank mask.
His personality exhibits extreme narcissism, self-absorption, and overconfidence. He always believes victory is certain and views his enemies, especially the Voltes team, as beneath him. This arrogance leads him to disregard Boazanian protocols for addressing royalty upon arrival at Skullrook, shocking Heinel loyalists like Jangal Rui. Heinel initially tolerates this behavior, valuing Bergan's potential against Voltes V. Bergan's deceptive nature drives him to continuously conspire against Heinel, collaborating with figures like Marquis Zaki and later General Gururu to orchestrate the prince's assassination.
Bergan arrives on Earth after General Zuhl's death. He deploys a combat beast armored with Maxingal, a special alloy also used in his personal armor, claiming it renders the beast impervious to Voltes V's weapons. His intent is to use this technological advantage to defeat Voltes V and supplant Heinel. This plan fails, resulting in his humiliation and demotion to Zuhl's former subordinate role under Heinel. Despite this, he orders all subsequent beast fighters to incorporate Maxingal armor. Voltes V eventually overcomes this defense through upgrades like the Superelectromagnetic Ball applied to its sword.
His betrayal of Heinel culminates in episode 37. After Emperor Zambajil publicly abandons Heinel, Bergan deserts the prince and allies with General Gururu. Together, they attempt to destroy Earth using a Magmite Bomb, a plan thwarted by the Voltes team member Doyle. Shortly before returning to Boazania, Bergan engages in a spar with Megumi Oka, resulting in further humiliation.
In episode 38, as the Voltes team advances toward Boazania, Zambajil dispatches Bergan and Gururu to intercept them. Initially successful, their efforts fail when Voltes V overpowers their forces and bypasses Boazania's planetary defense system, Sodom and Gomorrah. Bergan dies when the Voltes team destroys his starship during this battle.
His relationships reveal complex motivations. With Heinel, he maintains constant deception despite the prince's initial mercy after his failure and demotion. This betrayal recurs when he actively joins plots to kill Heinel and later abandons him entirely. His interactions with Katherine, Heinel's consort, show ambiguity. He expresses attraction by calling her "a beautiful lady" yet also displays contempt, stating women should not participate in warfare. This animosity may stem from Katherine repeatedly foiling his assassination attempts against Heinel.
In the game *Super Robot Wars J*, his role as Zambajil's assassin remains consistent. He builds trust with Heinel while secretly planning a military coup. At a critical moment, he steals Scar Rook's beast fighters, raids a factory, and attempts to kill Heinel. Katherine sacrifices herself to intercept the attack, triggering Heinel's intense grief and rage. This narrative branch expands his treachery but does not alter his core mission or fate.
Speculation exists regarding his physical status within Boazania's horn-based caste system. Theories suggest he might have been born hornless, lost his horns, or possessed unusually shaped horns he concealed. These theories stem from his perpetually masked appearance and the empire's practice of occasionally elevating useful individuals regardless of horn status, as seen with other hornless characters granted prominence. The original anime provides no explicit confirmation about his horns or social origins.
