Description
Zu Zanzibal, known as Draco in the live-action adaptation *Voltes V: Legacy*, is a high-ranking Boazanian military officer serving directly under Prince Zardoz. As one of Zardoz's three primary aides alongside Zandra and Zuhl, Draco supports the Earth invasion, driven by Emperor Zu Zambojil's order to capture the defector Baron Hrothgar for leaking Boazanian technology secrets.
Draco designs and deploys biomechanical weapons called Beast Fighters to combat Earth's defending robot, Voltes V. Utilizing advanced engineering expertise, he creates a samurai-inspired Beast Fighter after analyzing Voltes V's blueprints. None of his creations ultimately succeed in defeating Voltes V. He maintains unwavering loyalty to Zardoz, frequently clashing with fellow aide Zuhl over Zuhl's criticism of Zardoz's leadership. This friction culminates in Zuhl's assassination attempt against Zardoz; following Zuhl's execution, Draco and Zandra react with visible disgust.
When General Oslak replaces Zuhl, Draco immediately distrusts him. Their tension escalates into a physical duel won by Oslak. Although Zardoz later forgives Oslak for treasonous scheming, Draco and Zandra remain skeptical of his intentions. Draco later uncovers treachery by Marquise Zaki, another of Zambojil's agents, by having her tailed and exposing her unauthorized actions against Zardoz's orders.
Draco adapts the original anime's Jangal Rui, a three-horned, red-skinned general loyal to Prince Heinel (Zardoz's counterpart). Jangal aids Heinel's invasion of Earth while covertly protecting him from assassination plots by Emperor Zambajil. His tactical acumen includes devising strategies to verify the Boazanian heritage of the Voltes team's leaders. Surrounded by the Voltes team, Jangal commits suicide to avoid capture, revealing crucial information about Professor Kentaro Goh's imprisonment before his death. His demise deeply affects Heinel and fellow aide Katherine.
In *Voltes V: Legacy*, Draco's physical appearance differs from the anime; he has dark brown skin instead of red, reflecting the casting of Filipino actor Carlo Gonzales. His narrative arc in the live-action series concludes without explicit details about his fate, consistently emphasizing strategic support for Zardoz and suspicion toward rivals within the Boazanian hierarchy.
