Description
As chief of the Palace Guard in Little Tokyo, Big Al Dente commands the Samurai Pizza Cats, assigning their missions to protect the city. He serves on the city council alongside Prime Minister Seymour "The Big" Cheese, aware the prime minister secretly plots to overthrow Emperor Fred. Al Dente cannot openly expose this treachery due to Cheese's skillful use of plausible deniability and political maneuvering.
An anthropomorphic dog with brown fur, he stands 146 cm (4.8 feet) tall and weighs 59 kg (130 lbs), typically clad in a blue outfit with black pants. His character occasionally reveals a "feral side," erupting in furious barking when frustrated, often by the antics of those under his command.
He acts as the direct superior to the Samurai Pizza Cats. While frequently exasperated by their unconventional methods and perceived incompetence—once exiling them to the suburbs as punishment—he ultimately acknowledges their effectiveness during critical missions and demonstrates genuine concern for their well-being, mourning Speedy's presumed death during a comet crisis.
He similarly oversees the Rescue Team and Francine, the Pizza Cats' operator. With Princess Vi, he strives to instill a sense of royal duty, though she often disregards his guidance. His dynamic with Bad Bird shifts significantly: initially viewing him solely as a villain allied with the Big Cheese, Al Dente revises his stance after Bad Bird aids Speedy in diverting the comet threatening Earth. This act leads to tentative trust, and Bad Bird undergoes a trial period supervised by Al Dente to join the Pizza Cats' efforts.
Al Dente is married, referencing a wife in the English adaptation. His character arc culminates in the comet crisis, where his leadership and capacity for reassessing allies prove pivotal to safeguarding Little Tokyo.
