Description
Dr. Kenneth Onishi, also known as Daichi Ōnishi in Japanese media, is a human archaeologist and the world's foremost expert in energy applications. He lives in Tokyo with his son Koji and a rarely mentioned wife. Standing 6 feet tall, Onishi possesses black hair with gray streaks, brown eyes, and a thin mustache. He typically wears a white lab coat over a brown suit jacket, purple tie, brown trousers, and black leather shoes.

A polymath, his expertise spans archaeology, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics. Before his abduction, he led an excavation beneath Metro City seeking ruins protected by an energy shield emitting powerful energy readings. He harbors a strong affinity for vintage trains, especially steam locomotives.

Megatron abducted him during an International Scientific Symposium in New York. The Predacons subjected him to a psycho-probe to extract knowledge of Earth's energy sources and ancient Cybertronian artifacts like O-Parts and Fortress Maximus. Onishi resisted by focusing on mundane memories, particularly of vintage trains, causing the Predacons to misinterpret leads—like pursuing a steam train named "Grandpa" after mistaking a disk meant for Koji as a superweapon blueprint. He developed a tolerance to the psycho-probe, further hindering them.

Critical information extracted included the Payuma ruins location, where he and Koji hid a vital microchip. This chip helped locate O-Parts, a crashed Cybertronian spaceship with protoforms, and the Metro City excavation site housing Fortress Maximus. During Sky-Byte's independent mission to find Fortress Maximus, the Predacon inadvertently rescued Onishi in a stasis pod. Sky-Byte later discarded the pod during a clash with the Autobot Brothers, leading to Onishi's reunion with Koji.

Post-rescue, he collaborated with the Autobot AI T-AI to analyze O-Parts, revealing a map to the Orb of Sigma and Cerebros—Fortress Maximus's control key. Discovering Fortress Maximus responded to human bio-signatures, especially children, Onishi helped develop a control program. When Decepticons amplified Scourge's bio-signature to command the giant robot, Onishi coordinated a countermeasure using multiple children to override the signal. In the final battle against Galvatron, he identified a cyber-bat attached to Koji’s forehead, alerting Omega Prime.

In expanded media, he co-developed the Spark Engine with Dr. Haruma Gō, upgrading Spy Changers into Super Spy Changers to fight Mutants. He contributed to the Trainbots' power systems under the Raiden Initiative, naming a DE10 diesel locomotive "Kaen" to symbolize service to humanity. In a separate Animated continuity, he collaborated with scientists Brian Jones, Felix Adle, and Peter Morris to achieve commercially viable solar fusion. A multiverse variant witnessed an interdimensional Sky-Byte at the Tokyo Toy Show.
