Description
Mei-Mer (alternatively documented as Mei Mah) hails from the Mermaid Tribe inhabiting the Northern Hemisphere of a future Earth physically separated from the Southern Hemisphere. Like all Northern inhabitants, she belongs to a subspecies of humanoids capable of morphing into anthropomorphized beasts under specific conditions. Mei-Mer involuntarily transforms into a mermaid, replacing her legs with a porpoise-like tail, upon exposure to water, tears, or heightened emotional states like distress or crying. Her tears solidify into pearls, a distinct physiological trait referenced thematically and serving minor narrative functions.
Initially captured alongside fellow Beast Musketeers Wan Derbard (Tiger Tribe) and Bud Mint (Bird Tribe) by forces serving the human leader Uranus (Czar Master), Mei-Mer escapes imprisonment aided by the human child, Yuuni Password. This escape fuels her core motivation: joining the quest for Gaia, initially perceived as a tangible treasure promising wealth. Her companion Tuttle Millen, also of the Mermaid Tribe and capable of transforming into a sea turtle, accompanies her journey.
Within the group, Mei-Mer blends stereotypical desires for riches and occasional emotional fragility with a capacity for assertiveness and leadership when situations demand action. Her combat role involves piloting one of the three Jinn statues—tribal guardians revered as sacred artifacts but later revealed as ancient mechanized weapons. These Jinn can combine into a singular Humongous Mecha using Yuuni's spherical device, connecting directly to the overarching conflict as both the Beast tribes and Uranus's forces seek them for their link to Gaia's power.
Pursued by Uranus's agents V-Darn, V-Sion, and the imp-like Akumako, Mei-Mer and her companions navigate diverse environments, including an Atlantis-inspired domain tied to her tribe. Detailed exploration of her homeland or familial relationships remains minimal beyond passing references to her mother wielding a ceremonial paper fan. Her character development faces constraints noted in critiques regarding pacing and lore-establishment inconsistencies, particularly the later abandonment of established transformation triggers. Her arc culminates in participation in a three-way confrontation at the Gaia facility, where Gaia's true nature as a master computer opposing Uranus is unveiled, and Yuuni is retroactively identified as Gaia's interface manifestation.
