Description
Irene Belserion reigned as queen of Dragnof four centuries ago, presiding over a kingdom where humans and dragons coexisted peacefully—a harmony that granted her the title "Queen of Dragons." To settle territorial conflicts, she politically married General Rung from a neighboring nation and conceived their daughter, Erza Scarlet. When western dragons threatened Ishgar, Irene collaborated with the Sage Dragon Belserion to pioneer Dragon Slayer Magic. She became its first practitioner by enchanting Belserion’s power into herself, turning the tide of war.

Excessive use of this magic triggered her dragonification, sprouting draconic traits. Fearing her transformation, Rung imprisoned and tortured her for three years. To shield her unborn child, Irene halted Erza’s fetal development with magic. During Irene’s execution sentencing, Rung slashed her stomach to deny her pregnancy claims, provoking her full draconic metamorphosis. As a dragon, she annihilated Dragnof, killed Rung, and fled.

Centuries passed before Zeref Dragneel found her. Using enchantment, he restored her human appearance, though her physiology remained draconic—robbing her of taste, sleep, and sanity. Desperate to reclaim humanity, Irene plotted to transfer her soul into Erza after birth. But seeing her daughter’s face, she abandoned the scheme, leaving Erza at Rosemary Village’s church, fearing she might harm the child. This act hardened her into a ruthless persona.

She later joined the Alvarez Empire, ascending to lead the Spriggan 12 as its strongest female mage, dreaded as "Scarlet Despair." Commanding the Irene Squad, she directed soldiers including her enchanted swords-turned-human subordinates, Heine Lunasea and Juliet Sun.

Her magic specialized in High Enchantment, manipulating landscapes, climates, objects, and living beings. Key spells included Universe One, reconstructing Fiore’s terrain; Deus Zero, extracting magic like Fairy Heart; and Berserker, transforming targets into mindless power-enhanced monsters. She retained Dragon Slayer abilities and draconic transformation, amplifying her strength and magic to casually shatter bones and confront foes like Acnologia.

Her personality fused intellect, theatricality, and cruelty. She wielded historical knowledge and dark humor but tortured enemies like Mirajane Strauss vindictively. Though loyal to Alvarez, she openly criticized Emperor Spriggan for treating war as a "game." Her bond with Erza resurfaced during the Alvarez invasion: Irene initially sought to use her daughter as a vessel but yielded to maternal love. In their final clash, after failing to possess Wendy Marvell as an alternative, Irene enchanted a mortal wound onto herself, teleported to Edolas, and dissipated into reincarnation.
